Gardening in August

It's quite a time since I shared any pictures of the garden and these were taken in August so I am a bit late showing you them .....

As the season progresses in some areas of the garden the colours become bolder with the bright yellow of the rudbeckia and the scarlet flowers of the runner beans.

I still love the more muted colours too, like these oregano flowers much loved by the bees.

The white flowers of the Cosmos Purity, which survived the slugs and snails and provide so many flowers over such a long period.

The Japanese anemone flowers from August to October, they can be invasive, but I do love them.

Finally a combination of colours in our gravel garden  -Sedum (ice plant), with Knautia macedonica (Crimson flowers) and pale cream yarrow.

Do you have a favourite flower that is flowering at the moment? It is lovely currently seeing spring flowers appearing on the blogs from New Zealand and Australia that I visit. Welcome to my new followers  NataliaBobbi,   A breath of fresh air,  Oh so vintageNice day at Rosies and Geraldine.Thank you everyone for leaving me all your lovely comments I really appreciate them.

  1. Hello Sarah:
There are, as you say, great contrasts in flower colour to be found at late summer. Hot borders and cool borders can be an exciting counterbalance in the garden and it is so good that you have both. Knautia Macedonica is a favourite of ours, but we found it to be relatively short lived on the cold clay of Herefordshire.

    1. Knautia Macedonica has done quite well in our gravel garden we have had the plant about 4 years and it has so far survived two hard winters.

  2. A lovely collection of late summer flowers. I do like the photo of the white cosmos. We have the same yellow rudbekia but it is in a sheltered patch so it`s still only in bud.

  3. Love the photos of the flowers in your garden. I love roses although we only have a few in the garden but they have been battered by the rain this year so haven't been looking their best!

  6. There are still so many beautiful flowers in bloom in your garden Sarah! It must be a joy to look at. I don't have the Knautia macedonica in my garden, but it's on my wish list too. Such a pretty flower.

  7. It has been a good year for my Japanese anemones - and actually they are not invasive here, although possibly the white ones are different. I have also love the white cosmos too, which is looking lovely with white Nicotiana.

  8. What beautiful flowers in your garden. At the moment in Southern California, going through the hot summer but you can feel a bit of fall in the air. The roses are doing well and the zinnias are doing wonderful this year. I have had years that they took on the mildew early in the summer season but not this year. Have a lovely day enjoying your beautiful garden.

  11. Hello Sarah

Love the pics of your garden, since moving north to the highlands gardening is sometimes a challenge, often deer and occasionally highland cattle munch on my hard work, my favourite things flowering just now are a lovely chocolate cosmos thats going rampant in a pot with some chocolate mint, I love verbena bonarnis especially in the evening light its luminesant and my all time favourites sweet peas, have little jugs of them around the house :-) Annie x

  14. Beautiful!!! I think the flower blooming this time of year I love most would be the Japanese Anemone. I have none in my gardent though. I must have tried every flower possible but they just all need at least some light and sun and better soil. Upside, no problem with invasive flowers here.
    Bye,

  17. I love those oregano flowers, they're so delicate and pretty.I'm not much of a gardener myself which makes me a little sad, last year I planted and sowed and nothing came of it so this year I gave it up. To make up for it though some very pretty wildflowers have started to appear on my small back garden.

  19. Dear Sarah, it seems to work alright again! I could not comment on Sunday evening as the word "comment" did not appear. Google... well...
I am glad I can leave you a comment now: These flowers are very pretty - you have got a green thumb - definitely! My flowers in the garden are getting tired of blooming. It has been cold and dreary these last days - we even had snow down to 1600 m! We are hoping that summer comes back next weekend! Enjoy your Tuesday and thanks a lot for your e-mail message! Christa

  21. Thanks Sarah for your comment on my today's post. It is a pity that not so many people are interested in the paralympics. I am amazed though, that also sailing is a discipline! Incredible! If I was in Weymouth I would watch it and of course, I would also do other things there... everytime I write you - I am longing to come back! So I stop here now! Have a nice evening! Christa
