A cup of tea by the shore

We're off to Portland to Church Ope Cove to sit on the beach with a cup of tea and admire the views. I wondered whether you would care to join us?

It's quite a climb down, with many steep stone steps, but we can stop and admire the view on the way.......

This is a favourite destination of ours, maybe you recognised some of the stones from my header above.
Isn't it beautiful down on the beach, I could sit down here all day. Do you take sugar?

Some lucky people have beach huts down here. The walls of their "gardens" have been created from the stones on the beach.

The gaps in this stone wall have been filled with smaller pebbles - it's a sculpture in itself.

We are not quite alone, there are fishermen here too, it looks like one of them may be in luck!

Also, there are a few photographers here today, they are taking a picture of the rusty winch that used to haul the fishing boats onto the shore.

As we can't get close to the winch today, so I will  show you instead a picture of it  taken sometime ago. I'm sure it has been moved further up the beach now.

Unfortunately as we have climbed down, so we will now have to climb back up, let's follow the coast path.

Phew, that was a quite a climb! Can you see now see the cove below us? On the skyline to the top left is the  badly ruined remains of Rufus castle - a Norman castle.

Let's head back home now. I hope you have enjoyed the sea air too.

Hello and welcome to my new followers Janice (if you have a blog please let me know), Maria Glazacheva, and Mrs Black from Mrs Blacks this n that  it's so lovely to meet new friends.

  1. Magical photographs Sarah. Especially the last one on which the sea looks almost silver. It must be a joy to walk the cliffs and enjoy the beautiful scenery.

  4. Oh how I long to be by the sea, and hear the waves on shingle. I have the North Welsh coast not so far away but Rhyl and Prestatyn are poor excuses for seaside places. Thank you for taking us with you Sarah :)

    1. I'm so glad you tried and the recipe and let me know the outcome. Some recipes for Dorset Apple cake have the addition of raisins or extra spices. A slice of apple cake would have been nice down at the beach, unfortunately we had eaten it all!

    1. Yes Portland Bill is closeby. Church Ope Cove is on the east side of the island- walk down past Portland Museum and follow the coast path in the direction of Portland Bill. I'm going to have to get an extra flask with all these cups of tea!

  29. Hi Sarah,
I am very naughty and take two sugars please...
Loved your walk with Daisy, especially seeing the beach huts and sculptures made of stone.
We had a sand sculpture showing planned on our local beach ,but alas with all the rain, it was cancelled.
I do hope they will reschedule as we had planned to visit.
Wishing you a sunny week Sarah, love Maria x

  30. Thanks for taking me on a lovely virtual hike. I read a couple of British magazine on my iPad and I love seeing the wonderful little beach shacks on the beach. We have a dear friend in Somerset and another in Penzance so we hope to visit them before too long. I have only been to London and Bath.

  35. That looks like a great walk Sarah. I loved all your photos but my favourites were the ones of the "walled" gardens by the beach huts, I love any kind of wall that's built with stone and that one you showed where they used smaller pebles to fill in the gaps is just fantastic.

  36. My bloggy friend Sarah, I just adored this post. You truly have taken us all on a journey today. I love those stone sculptures/walls. I am also pleased to spot that a certain little four-legged one joined us for our tea on the beach. Green jasmine, no sugar please. :)

  42. Oh dear Sarah, nothing could be more cozy than to have a cup of tea by the shore. Both activities bring on PEACE and that is one thing I always want in my life.....AND, a WESTIE TERRIER!

Thank you so much for your visit yesterday! I am behind in my blogging for I taught a class yesterday but I am home today and loving it! You asked if my blog posts take a long time....unfortunately, I do not have a lot of time to make them BETTER, for I enjoy writing and it requires REVISION. But I was pressed for time this weekend and between finding the right photos and editing a rough draft, it took me about 2 hours.....not enough time in the eyes of many a good poetry teacher!

Thank you for your kind words. HAPPY DAY! Anita

  43. I would love to have a cup of tea with you and a jolly good chat. I really, really enjoyed that walk, yes; even the uphill hike! Thank you Sarah. I see that you are in good company with your band of merry followers.

I lived by the sea for seven years and I loved every minute of it. Even the gale force winds in winter.

    See you soon,

  50. Flippin 'ec! What a lot of comments! A place worthy of them. Definitely. A rough walk - but a walk worth walking, is to go along the little tracks through the vegetation from Church Ope north between the bottom of the cliffs and the sea. Haven't been that way for a couple of years (and the climb up at the Grove end is very steep too) but there was even a cave made of abandoned quarry pieces where someone had been 'living'.
