In a Cornish fishing village

When we went down to Devon back in September we visited the Cornish fishing village of Polperro.  My Granny used to live close-by in Fowey, but I'm sure I never came here as a child.

The roads are quite narrow and cars are not allowed in the village, which makes a pleasant change. It must be quite a tourist attraction in the summer, but for a cloudy day in September it wasn't too busy.

Fishing still takes place, but on a much smaller scale than in the past. We watched this fishing boat heading back to harbour.

Many of the houses are built on the sides of the hills. We met the local post woman as we were walking along a stretch on the coast path close to the houses, and we stopped to chat.  Her post round can be quite a challenge some days!  It reminded me of the books by Tessa Hainsworth who lives further down the coast, who left a hectic life in London and writes about her new life as a  post woman in Cornwall. Has anyone read any of her books? I would recommend them.

I couldn't resist this picture of two furry friends looking out the window!

The cottages are so pretty, we also we visited the local smuggling and fishing museum. There were many wonderful photographs of the village around the turn of the century, including one of a post woman delivering letters!  The fishermen used to wear Knit- frocks and there were some wonderful examples of different knitting patterns with wonderful names. I wish I could remember them! Each family had a distinctive pattern so that if any man was lost at sea they could easily identify them.

We then made our way home stopping at Whitsand bay, where we had the whole beach to ourselves. Daisy had a good run on the beach, as this is one beach that allows dogs on all year round.

It was a spectacular spot.

Where is your favourite beach? I think this one must be in my top 5.

  1. Oh Sarah what memories you've evoked. We spent our honeymoon in Polperro 42 years ago and stayed at an old coverted mill The Mill House Hotel overlooking the sea. Your photos are lovely and it looks exactly as it was all those years ago. I remember there were lots of potteries and art studios. In fact we have a few pieces still. Thankyou for sharing this visit.

  2. This post makes me long to see the sea again. The gentle sound of the waves, the crying of the seagulls, and the pretty cottages snuggled along the cliff edge.

  4. This beach looks wonderful! And the village is so very cute. It even reminds me a bit of Santorini with the white houses and some blue touches and the way the houses are built all the way up from the coast.
    Bye,

  6. Sweet Sarah!

I adore that whitewashed cottage and the photo with the two dogs looking out the window! It reminds me that there is a whole other world out there on the other side of the great pond.

My favorite beaches are NAVAGIO BEACH off the coast of Greece and Carmel-by-the-sea in Northern California where I went on my honeymoon 30 years ago.

I hope you are well and what a lovely tour! Anita

  7. In primary school in Glasgow I had a tin pencil box with a picture of Polperro on it - when things got boring I would daydream I was there! When I got to art school I got a summer job in Cornwall and finally got there. It looks as though it has lost none of its charm!

  8. What a beautiful, quaint village, and one I'd love to visit one day. The photo of the two wee faces at the window made me all warm and fuzzy inside - aren't they just the cutest little dogs.

  9. Lovely photographs - reminds me of Clovelly - oh so pretty but goodness I don't think that I could cope with the hills nowadays! My favourite beaches are those to be found on the far West coast of Ireland - they are stupendous, miles of white and blue and usually no one else to be found. Oh and a beach up in the Northern Territories - cannot recall its name now - a sea of exotic butterflies on the beach to keep us company. Oh some of those delicious ones down in Southern India - away from the tourist areas. That said the place we love to visit most is West Wittering - just along the coast from here! North, South, East, West - home is the place I love the best!
    Best wishes

  10. I am in love with this village Sarah.. Its so so pretty.
One can imagine the smugglers arriving on their little boats and hiding their "goods" in the nooks and cranies of the village hills.
How incredible that each family had their own wool knitted designs ..
The beach is spectacular, and the little doggies.
Great photos of your time spent in Polperro.

  23. What a beautiful place! It reminds me of the scenery in Doc Martin. Is it nearby? I especially love the picture of the two dogs in the window. It reminds me of Fergus and Jenny.

    1. Doc Martin is based in Port Isaac which is on the North coast of Cornwall, whereas Polperro is on the South coast. They both have the characteristics of a Cornish village be the sea.

  29. About 15 years ago we were in Mexico and met the cutest couple from Cornwall. He was an innkeeper at Sennen Cove. They have twice been to visit us in California, but we have yet to visit them in their 600 year old home near Penzance. I hope to do so before too long. The beaches look so lovely, or as Andrew always says, 'brilliant'.

  30. That's a beautiful village and the houses look so pretty, I don't think I would like living on any of those houses very close to the water though. I'm wondering where people park their cars with the streets being so narrow.

After reading your post I reserved Tessa's books through my library website, can't wait.
