A holiday by the sea in West Sussex

We have just spent a week's holiday by the sea in West Sussex. The weather was amazing - so warm and we were located right beside the beach. Returning home I am already missing the sound of the waves crashing on the beach......

The beach was almost empty compared with what we are used to down in Weymouth.

We stayed in Selsey which is 8 miles (12km) south of Chichester.  It is a small seaside town with a high street full of local shops that are not part of national chains. Even the local parade of shops close to our accommodation still had it's own butcher, baker and greengrocers, which was lovely to see and use. Do you still have these type of shops where you live?

We did not venture far - one day we took a tiny ferry across Furzefield creek.....

and walked up to Smugglers Lane and along a peaceful country road until we reached the village of Bosham.

The road floods at high tide and then the only traffic jams are caused by swans or ducks.....

Many of the old houses buildings are built using local materials of flint, so different to Dorset

We also had a lovely walk along the Chichester canal which was very peaceful with just moorhens, coots and butterflies for company.

At the end of Selsey beach is Pagham nature reserve.

Fisherman still operate from the beaches at Selsey and Pagham. The crab and lobster caught by
Selsey fisherman is very popular.

 Daisy enjoyed her break too.

Selsey has had it's own lifeboat, since 1861. It also has a small RNLI museum where we met one of the wonderful volunteers who had been a lifeboat man when he was younger. It was fascinating hearing his tales of the lifeboats and some of the incredible rescues that had been made. I admire all of those who risk their lives to save others.

I saw a few sunrises too - these pictures are among my favourites!

The best part for us was the accommodation we stayed in which was very usual, but that will have to wait until next time!

  8. I'm so happy to discover places through the experiences of other people and not through the book guides . Your last photos with the sunset are divine! I do love English cottages like "rusty duck"!

  9. Hi Sarah,
You've inspired me to go East and explore around that area, an area I grew up near but hardly know. Beautiful pictures as always. Hope you don't mind me asking but which camera do you use? Best wishes from Dorset too.

  12. Lovely photos as always Sarah. I know that neck of the woods- did you know that rumour says King Harold was buried in the church at Bosham by his lover Edith Swan Neck (so called because she had a long elegant neck and was very beautiful and graceful) after the Battle of Hastings? Bosham was his family seat all those long years ago.

    1. I didn't know about the rumour about King Harold. As there was a sign saying no dogs as we passed the church we did not venture into the churchyard. I hadn't heard of Edith Swan Neck and have just been on a google search to learn out more about her. It must have been so hard to go and identify Harold.

  13. Yes I used to live in Bosham but now live just up the road between there and Emsworth... did you pop into Emsworth? that's my local town... two butchers,a hardware shop, florist, bakers, grocers and a Co-op and four charity shops!
And all on the shores of Chichester Harbour...

Glad you enjoyed your visit Sarah.. Cx

  15. Good morning Sarah and DAISY!!!!!

My dear, you share the most lovely travels of a place that I need to see. I love the ocean, but especially when it is flanked by charming villages and a quiet hum. I want to thank you once again for taking us to the places that are special to you. Give little Daisy a hug on that little "tank" body of hers! We love westies for their rugged little bodies that look like military tanks!!!!!!!!

  16. What a lovely beach and gorgeous sunrises, which you captured so well. We too suffer from the big supermarkets killing off the local shops. I buy my veges from a farm shop which at this time of the year is only open on Fridays, and you should see the queues! S:)

  19. I can't wait to hear more ... it looks like the perfect place for a holiday, and not a stretch of coast I know ... I wonder if any tourist accommodation in the area accepts a herd of whippets!

  21. We have friends who live at Land's End, Cornwall and he is a member of the lifeboat crew. We have seen pictures of some of the rescues. It is amazing that people volunteer for something so dangerous.

We only have 1 chain store on Main Street in our little beach town. All the rest are one of a kind 'mom and pop" shops and restaurants located in historic buildings. I try to support the little shops so they can stay in business because the rent is quite high. We have a mall in town and I think we go there about once a year.

The lifeboat crew are amazing men, going out at all times of night.
We still have a couple of little shops here in the village.. i like to go to them. It keeps the village alive and helps them too.
looking forward to seeing where you stayed.

  29. Your photos are stunning! What a great place to have a holiday. I’d love to go there and that is the problem – when we fly to Europe, it is a bit expensive, so we try to see more than just France and as I say the problem is that there are so many beautiful places to visit on my list, and I can’t visit them all, unfortunately. But it is great to be able to watch lovely areas on your blog.
