The edge of the sea

Discovering a break between heavy showers we manged to have a short walk along the beach.

The recent storms have brought lots of sea weed on the shore. In previous years we have collected it and used it as a winter mulch on the vegetable patch.

I spotted this sandcastle all alone and sat down on the beach to take this picture. I then turned around to look at the view behind me and suddenly noticed the waves coming towards me and had to move fast! The sandcastle was completely washed away. It didn't seem that I was that close to the tide line!

Daisy was much more sensible and had stayed further up the beach. I shall have to follow her lead next time!

  1. Your photos are so pretty. I would love to be able to visit the sea any time I wanted, that must be so nice. I love the way the sky looks in your photos, it's really interesting - ominous but beautiful.

  9. Just along the coast we had a lovely morning yesterday, I did hear it was raining - sorry - POURING in Bath though. It did turn grey and dark in the afternoon, perfect for knitting and staying in. Glad you didn't get too wet top and bottom.

  10. I was amazed by the seaweed in Cornwall last week. A couple of days after 'The Storm' the sand was barely visible - I waded through the stuff to get below it when the tide was out, and then miraculously the following morning it had all gone again! If I was able to see a beach every day, I'm sure I'd notice a pattern - wind, tide or something that's influencing it - but sadly (for the moment), there's no beach in view!

  11. I love that little sand castle! I spent all my childhood holidays in Weymouth in the late sixties and early seventies with dear friend Geoffrey Poole, Geographer and long time Weymouth activist and bane of the local council; I wonder if you know him? x

    1. I have never met Geoffrey Poole but have heard of him through the local newspaper and the campaigns or issues he raised. It was such a shame the Jubliee Hall was not saved, it would have been a great asset to the town.

  20. You cannot beat a windswept and deserted beach to blow the cobwebs away. I wish I could collect all that seaweed up for my allotment xxx

  21. Looks like you had a lovely day. The seaweed for mulch is a very good idea. One persons garbage is another treasure.

  22. Hi Sarah,

The photos of your trip to the seaside are beautiful and often find the sea is lovely when it is wild and stormy.
You are often the only one on the beach too. The sandcastle is fun.
    Happy Thursday

  24. I love walking on the beach after the rain, although we don't get much rain.

Lulu eats her way down the beach grabbing every piece of seaweed she can. We googled it and it is good for dogs. Thank goodness she is eating some things that are good for her instead of paper towels, rubber bands and socks.

  26. I love the winter beaches and the rough sea - we were at our beach cottage last weekend and the sea was quite wild and when the tide is in it is always much closer in the winter months. The sandcastle is so cute.
