When the sun shines

Firstly thank you for all your comments about the storms in my last post. The weather didn't improve at all during the week did it?  It's quite unbelievable how the rain continued to fall and the winds were so strong and now other parts of the country are also suffering! The sea here has continued to lash the shores and the diggers have been out everyday moving the pebbles again - but for today at least the sun came out!

The claws of a digger earlier in the week at Preston Beach

Finding varying walks that are dry underfoot is getting hard.

So two weeks ago we took a chance that the spring tide would be receding and headed for this walk around the harbour.

The fishing boats always tower above you when the tide is high. This fishing boat below still had some dogfish caught in its nets.

All along the south west coast the fishermen have been unable to get their boats out to sea due to the bad weather and so haven't been making a living. One benefit of the adverse weather conditions has been the way communities have come together to help each other out over the past few weeks.

We found the first daffodils we have seen this year, a sight to add much cheer. I was also reminded of the smell and sight of masses of daffodils when I received a question on a long forgotten post showing fields of Cornish daffodils. It brought me hope of better times ahead.

Back on our walk the coal tits were flying from tree to tree and a home by the harbour was well prepared for flooding.

These last few pictures were taken today.

On Valentines Day a local craft group attached crochet flowers to the town bridge and asked passers by to take them home to their loved ones. It was so wet on Friday that I didn't venture out to see them. I thought it was a lovely gesture, however, and would have loved to have captured it.

The sunshine bought everyone out today - there was so many people getting out to enjoy the fresh air and sunshine. It's my birthday this week and I have the week off work . It will be good to have a few days off  - get the house more organised, mend some of the broken fences, and catch up with lots of blogs, while I nurse a streaming cold my husband has kindly given me!

Hope you have a good week ahead too.

  3. I'm glad to see the weather has improved. I love the photos of the houses and buildings in the harbor, everything is so picturesque. How nice to see the daffodils in bloom, that is a very hopeful and happy sign.

  4. Oh my goodness, we were in Weymouth last week. Small world!

  5. I've been thinking about you and wondering if you had been affected by the flooding. I've also thought about the fishermen and assumed they wouldn't be able to go out and earn a living with the weather we've had. I can't imagine what it's like to suffer so much with the weather. We've had it wet and windy up here, with plenty of fallen trees and such and although river levels are high and fields and footpaths very squelchy, there hasn't been any actual flooding, beyond huge puddles in roads.

  6. Happy Birthday, and I hope you feel better! No doubt today's sunshine would have helped rid you of bugs. Thought of you on Friday night, while listening to the local radio, above the noise of the wind and rain, a chap from Weymouth rang in to say he had just seen his neighbours shed roof fly past his window and end up in the kitchen window of another house! Glad we escaped with no storm damage, but only by the skin of our teeth, I still feel for those poor Somerset folk. Have a good week off!!

  7. A bit of calm for you to get out. Lovely photos. All is good here. I'm enjoying every bit of the beautiful weather here in Southern California. I'm not a cold weather person. Have a lovely day.
Blessings to you and your family.

  8. Sarah, my hope is that you all will be relieved soon of this very extreme weather. We had our extreme cold in January, and now winter just feels normal. But to have these storms must get depressing! But you show us all hope with these little tidbits of spring; the bird is so sweet! Anita

  16. Thank you for that wonderful impressions, I always enjoy reading your blog and the photographs. We also know the doors with the sandpacks infront of the door when the stream is coming over its bank in our little town each year.
I wish you good health and a wonderful birthday!

  18. Lovely to see such calm photographs for a change - we certainly have taken a battering over the last few weeks - and you're right - it was good to get out and about after being stuck indoors for so long - bliss.

  19. Shame you have a cold on your week off & birthday !
What lovely bright colours in these photos. Our seafront was packed with people out to see the storm damage which made the whole thing even sadder. I was out to walk the dog & found the devastation quite unbelievable. People are looking at their torn apart beach huts & I don't think the loss has sunk in yet.

  20. Thinking of all people in seaside communities. So glad that you are ok at the moment. Your comment about the difficulty for the fishermen reminds me of the Mousehole Cat storylegend x

  28. We nearly came down to the coast yesterday to make the most of that rare day of sun, but time and chores beat us ... :( Your photos in the previous post are amazing ... the storms have been unbelievable and I really feel for all those who's homes have been flooded. Hopefully, there will be a positive change in the weather soon.
Hope your cold is getting better.

  29. I'm wondering all these days if there is an answer on the contribution of climate change to the recent storminess, rainfall amounts and floodings in your beautiful country Sarah...But it seems that things are getting better now and your wonderful images bring relief and smiles!
Wish you with all my heart a sunny and serene week!

  31. Happy Birthday Sarah, enjoy your week off. Yes it's been a bad time for the fishermen, as you saw in my photos the harbour was packed out with boats unable to put out to sea. Happily yesterday we saw plenty going out and coming back. Love the idea of the crochet from the bridge.

  32. Happy Birthday to you Sarah! I think February birthdays are perfectly placed to dispense with some of the end-of-winter gloom that happens at this time of the year. :-)

You deserve days and weeks and months of sunshine after the winter you have gone through. I hope the damage to your fence isn't too bad. I also hope you get over your cold quickly so you can enjoy your week off of work!

  33. Happy Birthday, Sarah! I hope you are feeling better by THE day so you can enjoy whatever festivities your family has planned for you. The weather HAS to get better......doesn't it? Surely we will all see Spring soon with just the right amount of rain and sun to allow the landscape to be cluttered with beautiful greenery and flowers!

  34. Happy Birthday! Thanks for the very happy memories of Weymouth. I haven't been for ten years at least but spent every childhood holiday there in the 60's and 70's. x

  35. Get rid of that cold quickly Sarah, in time for your birthday, and have a lovely day. May the sun shine, and you can enjoy your week off work too.
It is lovely to see some photos with blue skies and everyone busily going about their daily tasks again. It has all been very worrying looking at the news every night.

  37. Happy Birthday - I hope you feel better soon. I've been hearing on the news about all the bad weather and keeping my fingers crossed for all those around you. The photo with the sign waters edge is quite ironic, isn't it? The coal tit is beautiful, we don't have those here. I always enjoy seeing something new. Best wishes. xo Kim

  40. Lovely uplifting pictures. It's amazing how we have come to appreciate the sunshine so much, now it has become so rare this last few months!
Hang on in there - it'll soon be spring :)

  41. The 16th February 2014 will be a day to go down in all our memories. Masses of people out in the sunshine - even complaining about the heat! I was community liberation - and lots of people exploring in places I think they rarely go. In some places - like the exposed sand where pebbles are usually piled high at Chiswell - if the opportunity isn't taken it may never be offered by nature again. It's good to see your picture of Weymouth beach. It has seemed, at times, as if the tide had come in and planned never to retreat.

  44. I enjoyed seeing your photos Sarah and like you can't find anywhere decent to walk. What a difference a day makes - Saturday we battled our way down to Dover in the raging winds - Sunday there wasn't a breath of wind and the skies were blue, cloudless and sunny! Have a wonderful birthday and I hope your cold clear up soon.

  45. Happy Birthday Sarah, hope you've enjoyed your week! Haven't seen any daffodils out here yet, hopefully it won't be too long - I know it won't be long until the warmer weather when the daffodils come out.

  46. Hey Sarah,

When the sun has shone, the light has been so bright. Or maybe it's just because I am so used to the grey at the moment. Your pictures are beautiful.

  47. I am glad you got to see the sun. The daffodils are beautiful and bring me hope. We are still under so much snow. I can't wait to see the flowers again. Today we had a thunderstorm with snow. It's only the second one I have seen. Hope your weather stays nice and you have a lovely birthday.

  48. I love all the colors of the houses along the sea and the sweet little yellow bird is beautiful.

What struck me about all the people on the beach was the way they are dressed. They are obviously bundled up in jackets and hats. It looks so different from our beach this week with everyone in shorts and flip flops. I do wish the weather would balance out for everyone - a little rain for all instead of drought in spots and floods in others.

  49. Happy belated Birthday Sarah. Isn't it amazing how a little sunshine makes everything look brighter and more cheerful?
