A May garden

The highlight in our garden in May is the aquilegias in their many different shades.

Aquilegia

Our old washing basket has seen better days and has now made a good home, just outside the back door, for these cut and come again salad leaves.

The vegetable garden is still looking quite bare but many seeds are just starting to appear.

The alliums are always a  favourite too!

Do you think Twinkle is enjoying the scent from the lilac?

I have been enjoying visiting Chelsea Flower Show on the television every evening  this week and seeing a feast of gorgeous flowers and gardens. What is your favourite plant in the garden at the moment?

  1. Oh, my! What a beautiful garden, stunning colours! My favourite flower at the moment? The first bloom of my Cliff Richard (no comments please!!) rose! It is a lovely 'old English' type of bloom and smells delicious!!! I was given the 2 rose trees when I left work, they knew me so well!!!!!! Heading Dorset way next week YAY!!

  2. Dear Sarah,

Your beautiful garden must be a delight and loved seeing all your gorgeous flowers and plants. Also lovely to have all the salad greens and they look delicious in the basket.
Enjoyed seeing a little glimpse of the Chelsea Flower show here on television and must be great to actually be walking around there and seeing all the beauty. Have you been to the show? And yes, I am sure Twinkle is enjoying smelling the pretty lilac - so sweet.
enjoy the rest of the week
    hugs

  3. Beautiful Sarah.
The deep blue aquilegias are lovely and I do like the idea of having the salad leaves in a basket by the door!

  4. Our Columbines are blooming very lushly this year in shades of pink and purple and white. We even have a little wild orange and yellow one. What is interesting about these flowers is that they almost seem to change from year to year in shape and even color. You have used the latin name for them which is also very pretty, aquilegia. Wikipedia mentioned that they are also called Granny's Bonnets. They are one of my favourite flowers.

  5. I love how my Aquilegia (we just call them Columbine here) self sow. I'm always digging them up from the pebble walkway and tucking them in my garden here and there. Your basket by the door is a great idea for lettuce! And so pretty. Even you grass looks great. We dug up our front lawn a couple years ago and put down pea gravel and garden beds because we just couldn't compete with the moles.

  8. Dear Sarah - I love the Aquilegias too popping up everywhere. They are very promiscuous the way that they seed themselves all over the place, and you can never be sure what colour they might be.
Your salad leaves look very inviting.

  9. Your gardens look lovely. Mr. QD has bought a few flowers but he hasn't planted anything yet. The only thing in bloom right now are some Irises and a few pansies. We're having a rather late Spring this year. Twinkle looks quite comfortable in his shady spot.

  15. The garden is looking lovely - so neat and well cared for. The Aquilegias have been stunning this year - they seem to have grown much taller than normal - you have such a variety of colours. Sadly mine are starting to go over now but soon the roses will be taking over - can't wait.

  16. Aquilegia are so pretty - they will be on my list for stocking our new garden! And I do think your veg patch is perfect - pretty and functional too. I'm sure Twinkle is enjoying the scent, she looks very happy. Juliex

  17. Oh your garden is looking wonderful! My favourite at the moment here is a candelabra primula in a lovely cerise shade....as I write it I realise they like our acid conditions and I should grow more of them.

  18. Your garden is looking beautiful. It's the best time of year for growing isn't it - everything is fresh and new and pretty. I've got a pot with a couple of herbs in it, I can never remember what they are, oregano maybe, and one of them is a vivid lime green. It's always such a lovely contrast with all of the other greens. Right now, that's my favourite thing in the garden. You've reminded me, I should take a photo!

  22. This year, I have not been able to see the chelsea flower show. Its not been showing over here.
I have seen it on tv before too.. its a stunning event, with such magnificent layed out gardens and varieties of flowers.
Your garden Sarah.. is beautiful.. so well maintained. Reminded me of the song.. "how many types of flowers grow in an English country garden"-
Twinkle sure loves the smell of the lilac... he is so cute
    Rose is my favorite flower.
We have had so much unexpected rain this last week, that they have been damaged and broken. I do hope better weather soon.

  23. Your garden looks beautiful! May is such a lovely time.

The aquilegia here are pretty too. We planted some bright red Geum Mrs Bradshaw with them a few years ago and the purples, blues and reds look really good together.

Your Aquilegias are beautiful and they pop so nicely with all your lovely greenery in your garden. Your salad basket looks beautiful and love the way you reused your laundry basket. I can't wait to see what your growing in your vegetable garden. It is always neat to see what others are growing. At the moment, roses. My roses are blooming again. They like the cooler weather we are having.
Your sweet Twinkle looks so relaxed.
Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful day and weekend ahead.

  32. Hi Sarah,
Your garden is lovely, a lovely size too, wish my borders could be wide like yours as I keep running out of space when I divide my plants each year. Your plants seem more advance than ours here, it must be warmer where you are. Love the salad in the wicker basket.

  33. Absolutely stunning Sarah! Only two of mine from lots came up this year. And none of the seed that I collected came good. I shall let them disperse naturally this year. Maybe I'll get better results.

  36. Your gardens are lovely. They are so full of green and flowers. Our climate is too dry to grow such dense foilage and now we are in severe drought so we are told to manage our water use wisely. We have to pay for water here, so we use drip systems, etc. When we moved to our cottage 7 yrs ago the yard was dry hard pan dirt. We have slowly planted all of our trees, bushes, grass, flowers, vegetables...and now that the trees are large enough to provide shade we are able to plant more flowers. But our gardens will never ever be as beautifully lush as yours. I love your basket of lettuces. Enjoy planting. xxo Kerrie

  39. Looks like you have a lot more than aquilegias to look at in your garden at the moment - what a beautiful well cared for space! I love the use of your old washing basket - so often 'recycled' containers can look a bit scruffy but that looks beautiful, shabby chic at its best!

  41. WOW!!!! what a stunning garden Sarah. I love the plants at this time of year. Dont you find your aquilegias cross pollinate eventually and all end up the same? It was something I found in my previous garden.

    1. Luckily we haven't found that they have all ended up the same although they have cross pollinated. We originally only bought a couple of different plants and this is the result! Sarah x

  48. Dear Sarah and Daisy! Thank you dear friends for coming to visit me yesterday! Yes, I am much better, but vertigo has a way of lingering on and it's been at least 9 weeks now. I was able to garden quite strongly yesterday, but too much movement of my head causes a bit of a dizzy episode!

Have a most magnificent Sunday! Anita
