Walks from the doorstep

   Which way to go?

We live in the village below, which lies between the hills and the sea. Sometimes it is hard to choose which direction to take. Do we to turn right

and head for the sea?

Where we can smell the tang salty sea air and listen to the waves crashing on the seashore,

and enjoy either the distant views of Weymouth or

the isle of Portland across the water.

Or maybe instead turn left and head for the hills and woods......

which are currently covered in a carpet of wild garlic.

Luckily with the lighter evenings it allows us time to take both routes and enjoy the contrast between what each has to offer us. Which way would you go? Do you have a choice when you leave your front door too?

Last evening we headed towards the hills and met a man leaning over a five bar fence with a glass of white wine in his hand, just drinking in the view, that's what I call a perfect end to the day!

Hope you have had a good weekend too.

  1. Dear Sarah,
wish I could start my day with this dilemma in mind! You live in such a wonderful place, life can be magical in its simplicity, drinking in the view, what's better? Thanks for those marvellous photos.

  2. I've only recently discovered your blog, and I think your photos are amazing. I hope to be accompanying you on many travels in the future. You really have an eye for finding beauty in ordinary things.

  3. I would probably head for the hills and the woods when wild garlic is in bloom :-) I expect you get views of the sea from your "Wessex Heights"? Such a lovely place to live!

  4. Dear Sarah,

Whatever walk you choose, it looks lovely!!! Wish we had such a rough coastline like yours. It's all dunes and sand in Holland :-)

    Happy week!

  5. I'm lucky to have some lovely choices of walks all around and to live in a beautiful, though very different, part of UK too. Love that photo of Daisy and your new header photos Sarah.

  6. I would almost always head for the sea...but I do like the hills and woods too. I could dream of living where you do. I do not have such a dreamy choice of paths to take just outside my front door. We have to drive a bit to get to the creek and wooded paths. Oh how I wish I did live somewhere like you. But I do try to make the best of it by being thankful for a cozy cottage to call home and gardens to hide in. This is one of my favorite posts, but I think I say that of all of your posts! I guess I should say that your blog is one of my favorites!!!! Thank you for sharing your dreamy, beautiful life with us.

  7. It would be the sea for me everytime Sarah but you are really spoilt for choice arent you?

  8. O Sarah! What an amazingly beautiful place you live in! Gorgeous coastline and woods. When we leave the door, there's none of both to be discovered. We have to take the car first and drive a while before we find beautiful nature like this. I think many people dream of living in a place like you do, you're so blessed and lucky to have that beautiful nature so near you. Enjoy it to the fullest! Thank you for letting us enjoy it with you. Have a wonderful new week.

  9. Oh how can you choose between the two. I love the picture of your little dog - so sweet. Have a lovely week and enjoy your walks whichever one you choose.

  10. I think I'd do what you did--go both ways! Perhaps the temperature and winds might help me choose one over the other on any given day, though--or Gabriel might decide for me. Daisy must really love your walks! I especially like your first photo of the view through the opening in the trees. I could look at that view all day long.

  11. I like to walk in either direction from my house, though both ways lead down city streets with sidewalks. I think you may be spoiled for choice with the wonderful places you can visit! That first photo just captures my imagination, what a beautiful view.

  12. What wonderful choices! I'm mainly a sea gypsy but hills and woods lift my heart too ~ I think I would have to alternate every other day!

  14. I wish we had a pretty spot to walk like you do, Daisy is enjoying the flowers I see.

  15. It is so beautiful over there! Your village is gorgeous too. I honestly couldn't decide which route to take if I was you with options like those. Here, we have the option of the beach at one end of our road and the countryside on the other end and I tend to lean towards the beach.....Have a great week Sarah! Mel x

  16. You live in heaven, wonderful impressions. And now I know the name of the plant I allways met in Britain: Wild garlic!
    Thank you.

  17. Hi Sarah, You do live in a beautiful part of Dorset, I guess it's hard to decide which way to go, its all so pretty especially when the sun shines and the sea sparkles. Portland looks really interesting from across your side of the water, I've been to Portland once but never really explored there so it's a must visit place sometime this summer. Happy rambles. Elizabeth from the other end of the county.

  19. MY GOODNESS this is heaven on earth, SARAH! Look at Miss Daisy - I think she too is contemplating whether to turn right or to the left! You live in a magical fairytale my friend! We once lived right across the beach, north of Boston Massachusetts, near Salem. All we had to do was walk out our front door and there was the beach. Now, we have many lakes around us, and we don't have far to go. I can however, walk out my front door and encounter ducks, rabbits and sweet little birds. That village where you live.....TAKE ME NOW!

  20. Such a dilemma :) two walks a day, one in each direction! Such a beautiful spot...... Hi Daisy!

My Daisy is tired out as we have commenced Spring walking in earnest here after a long cold winter.....we had so much ice and snow this year that walking was impossible.....but we are making up for it now.....she is sound asleep as I write this....Lackie too!

  22. You are so very fortunate to live in a place that gives you those choices for walking. They are completely different kinds of scenery, both beautiful in their own way. My daily walks are surrounded by mountains and trees. My choice is whether I'll be walking along the road and paths, or in the woods themselves.

  23. What beautiful views in all directions!

  24. What beautiful views you have ... I would certainly have chosen BOTH routes! Especially if I had a dog like yours to walk with me :)

  25. Such lovely pictures of your beautiful part of the country.
From my front door I can turn one way and head to the river and turn the other away and ramble over fields....to the river! All very pretty though, we're not too far from the sea but it's a drive not a walk. We've had some perfect weather for being outdoors, let's hope it stays awhile.
    Enjoy your week Sarah.

  26. The man seems to have the right idea. Too many people never take the time to enjoy the day.

  27. Perfect. I think there is something very special in being able to walk straight into beautiful countryside from your own doorstep. Looks like you are spoilt for choice. Juliex

  28. It sounds just delightful! I wish that we had such great places to go for a walk in the evening, but it is so nice to see your walk! Thanks for taking us along. xx

  29. As much as I love the countryside I think it would be the sea that would win hands down. Your walks look stunning and I loved the photos.

  31. I would head for the sea. I love sea views and walking along beaches. Where I live my choice of walk is to walk over the hills or to keep to the flatter areas across fields. The fields are usually quite muddy though.

  32. A dilemma indeed ... I love both equally. M x

  34. thank you I always enjoy my fix on Dorset your posts give me Daisy is wonderful what a little poser

  35. Sounds like you have the best of both worlds! Lovely to see your glimpses of Weymouth and Portland, both areas I knew well as a child. The man with the glass of wine has the right idea, to stop and enjoy what life has to offer, if only for a few moments each day, very sensible!

  36. This reminds me of the book by Proust called Swann's Way where he writes about his evening walks when he has to chose either going right or left out of his front door. To our delight we found at the Manchester Artists Book Fair that someone had produced a very long pull out concertina book of both walks in photographs as it is today. On one side of the concertina is the walk turning left through the village / town and on the reverse the walk turning right. It stretches out to about 3 feet and is one of my prize posessions. Your beautiful photos reminded me of this. Viv x

  39. Dear Sarah,

Each time I pay you a visit here I am deeply entranced by the beauty you capture AND your ability to convey it. Both paths lead to joy from your home and drinking a glass of wine at the end of the day with such a view in sight is indeed perfect.
