Autumn colours

Having been blown away by the wonderful autumn colours I've seen from other countries in the following blogs Morning Musings by CathyDesign Dreams by Anne and Amateurs ventures on life. I was determined to search out some autumn colour in England too! Although there are a few woods around here, unfortunately many have already shed their leaves and the autumn colour we found was mainly from the bracken.

Is it me or are the autumn colours not quite as magnificent as the last two years?

Colmer Hill with the Caledonian pine trees on the top is a distinctive local landmark. The trees were planted during the 1st World War. This looks so different to the last time I took a picture of this hill in spring, when the bluebells were covering it's slopes.

As my husband rapidly walked through this field of cows I couldn't resist capturing this moment!

The colour of the bracken on the cliffs blends in so well with the brown cow and the cliffs and the  pebbles on the shore. We are still appreciating the thrill of all this scenery being accessible from our doorstop by foot!

Wishing you all a good weekend. We shall be enjoying homemade pumpkin soup, yet another way of celebrating the season! Thank you as always for popping by, I do appreciate your visits and also the lovely comments that you leave.

  1. If I lived there with that beautiful scenery, I would be okay with not having a lot of fall color. Your photos are beautiful!

  2. These are lovely photos. I think the autumn colour (around here) has been great, and better than the last couple of years... but then the colours of the leaves (whether they turn to shades or red or just go brown) depends on the weather and I think we've a lot more sunshine here than the south (so I've heard) over the summer.. so maybe we're experiencing different autumn colours in response to different weather.

  3. All the photos are lovely but my heart responds to the last one where the sea and clouds almost meet at the horizon. A breathtaking photo. How I miss the sea.

  4. I sigh with a love and an ache to go to your England sweet Sarah....colors or not, your country boasts some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world. THOSE COWS! AHHH! And our autumn here in the midwestern United States has to be one of the most beautiful we have seen in years. The wonky weather patterns we all have experienced have changed the seasons a bit!

Enjoy all that the holidays have to offer for you !!! Anita

  5. Oh, Sarah, if I lived as close to the shore as you do, I'd not long for the autumnal colors, at all. The blues and greens of the sea would suit me just fine all year round. I find that, being about an hour's drive from the coast in Southern Alabama, USA, not seeing the shore or fall color changes quite frustrating...Stuck in the middle, so to speak. I so enjoy your photos, they are lovely! Waving from across the sea ~ Donna E.

  10. Oh Sarah, what wonderful views you have! I love the sea so much.
I do not remeber if the colours of autumn are different from last to this year, we have a warm autumn, the leaves are mostly at the shrubs.

  12. I love seeing your coastal photos - I spend a week in Lyme Regis with my dad and children every year in February half term, and I recognise so many of the places in your photos.
And we still have lots of Autumn colour in Suffolk, but I've just been back to the Netherlands where they were a couple of weeks behind us - it was beautiful there!

  16. Delightful pictures of autumn the leaves seem to be slower in turning this year - I blame the milder weather.

  17. Thanks for the mention Sarah! What I'm finding here in Maryland that the trees are not waiting on each other to all change at the same time. We still have some with brilliant color while others are bare. This includes the same species of trees! I'm so glad you are enjoying your new home and its beautiful scenery.

  18. I love these coastal walks on the cliffs and you made such a magical pictures of the scenery. Autumn colours are always beautiful but in this case I choose for the sea, I can spend hours staring at the horizon and the waves.
    Have a lovely weekend!

  19. What lovely views of my favourite places, and I never left the settee!!!! The photo of the trees on Colmer Hill made me smile. A good few years ago now, I did a machine embroidery day school and took post cards of the trees as my 'inspiration'. When I came home, I showed my 'creation' to the boys and No1 son said 'oh, Mum, what a lovely Octopus'!! So EVERY time we pass the trees, usually heading for Lyme Regis, someone say's 'there are your trees Mum'!! I have to say I didn't realise there was a history attached as to why they were there. I would dearly love to climb up to the top and see the trees at close quarters, think I may have to get into training before I contemplated that though! Weekend wishes! X

    1. We walked up Colmer Hill a few years ago we reached it via a sunken deep track, which was also lovely. It is really time we did this walk again! I always love the view of the hill from the main street in Bridport. Sarah x

  20. Fantastic that you can do that walk from your back door! It may take us a bit longer in the car, but a few walks on the beach and cliffs are on my agenda over the next week or so. Fabulous pictures. The sea is certainly taking on its cooler colour palette.

  23. Wonderful photos of our lovely west country in autumn! Love the colour of bracken! Autumn isn't my favourite season (its drawback to me are the darker days and closed-in-early nights which I find oppressive) but the autumn colours make it a close second to spring! Time I changed some of my ornaments around - put away the pinks and porcelains of summer and dug out the copper lustre of autumn, to go with bowls of rosy apples and walnuts from our tree.

  25. You have magnificent landscape around you that your photos show so well. We are getting into fall colors here, as we usually have to wait until the second week of November, but as you say, I don’t think this year the colors are as vibrant.

  26. That's a beautiful stretch of coast you have there.
I agree this year the autumn tree leaves are not so good, probably because of a lack of frosty weather. But that bracken is intense and crispy and lovely!
    All the best :)

  34. Dear Sarah,

How I love coming back here, and how I love where you take ME. The ocean, your lovely English countryside....nature! It is all a gift.

Thank you, kind friend, for coming to visit! Yes, our French classes at the high school are challenging and we try to make it fun for the kids. I always try to get these kids to THINK and use the language to create but these days, some kids can't even imagine.....

I hope your November is off to a great start! It is very cold and windy here today, so our winter is arriving on schedule....oh, the winter we are going to have. It frightens me!

    PEACE!!!! Anita

  35. Gorgeous, Sarah. I've been thinking that the colours are more poignant this autumn and how precious these few weeks are before all the leaves fall off the trees and vines.

It's always a joy to visit your lovely blog.

  36. I think I have local walk envy ... we have beautiful countryside here, but no views of the sea. And I agree, there has been less glorious autumn colour this year, I assume because of the continuing mild weather.
