One year later

This week marks the first anniversary of moving into our new home, it does seem so long ago now since we moved! We had lived in our previous home for 22 years and I thought that it would be such an ordeal to leave there, especially as it was where the children had grown up. However, we have loved being here so much and wish we had moved a long time ago! So if you are at a similar crossroads I would recommend a change!

This month Coast magazine have an article about moving to Bridport and West Bay. They highlight so clearly why this area is so special with it's stunning coast, countryside, rolling hills and sleepy villages and vibrant art and music events. We were told when we moved here that there was so much going on that you could go to something different every day. That does seem to be the case and consequently the time I have for blogging has reduced!

We have enjoyed seeing so much more wildlife. The garden has been full all summer with visiting bees, butterflies, moths and crickets and it has been a pleasure to garden without so many snails and slugs. The days of collecting over one hundred slugs off the lawn before breakfast are now a distant memory!

The highlights, however, have been listening to the skylarks from just outside the back door and while washing up one evening, witnessing a barn owl hunting. Currently we have seen house martins and other emigrating birds stopping off before their long journey south.

The market town of Bridport has many independent shops selling local food and drink and it has allowed us to reduce our spend in the supermarket and have local tastier food.

Luckily the house was in good order so we have been able to spend plenty of time out in the garden.

It has been fantastic to have the greenhouse, it has made such a difference getting seeds to germinate and we have been eating our own tomatoes for a few months now.

We are always discovering new walks some with spectacular views like these.

And this view makes me smile and brightens my day whatever the weather, when we take the car out.

I would like to thank you all for your wonderful comments and friendship and visits over the last year too, and sharing some of my high lights.

Sarah x

  3. Dorset is 'Gods' own county....There's no argument there...None!
Lived and worked here most of my life....And, the further west you
go the lovelier it is..! Bridport, and Lyme Regis are are a bit special,
not only the beauty of the sea..But the surrounding are!

If you've never been to Dorset....Make an effort, even for the weekend,
you'll finish up staying the week! You can keep yer cities...All of them!

    Oh! Happy 1st Anniversary...May there be many..many more...! :).

  5. What a lovely post Sarah, I can hardly believe it's a year (our year is coming up in December, but it's 15 months since we left our beautiful home in Brixham). You have done wonders in the garden...can you come and do mine? :)
I know what you mean about having less time, when we add in all our decorating time and arranging workmen too, time has flown by. I also think the ill health of my husband has taken a huge chunk out of our time, however he is back to full health now.
I can't wait to settle a bit more and envy you being so settled in your beautiful home and what a place to live too!
Good luck Sarah for the next 12 months, I hope they continue to be very happy times for you and your husband.

  6. Sarah, one year - so quick. Life ist short, we must do the best things in our time. Your greenhouse ist wonderful, I would like to have one, but no space. And I have made a screenshot from your bench to show it Mr. W.
We are back from Suffolk, Norfolk and Lincolnshire, very different to the places we know from before.
Do you know what I don't like in Britain? Bingo and Entertainement.

  8. My oh my....Sarah, you live in a fairytale. Anywhere by the ocean is GREAT! We do grow into our new surroundings, don't we? I felt like that when we first had to move from our beloved BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, where we went to college and really grew up together as a couple. But now, we love our home of 18 years here in this place. Enjoy every bit of your beautiful home and garden!

  9. I'm so pleased your house move worked out for you. It must have been quite an upheaval after so many years. We've been here for three years now and, while the actual move was fairly traumatic and it's taken a good while (and a good deal of money) to sort out the house, we haven't looked back. I thoroughly enjoy reading your blog, Sarah, and seeing photos of your lovely place (area and garden) – thank you.

  14. It has been a pleasure to follow you on this journey. I wondered how you could leave your home of 22 yrs but the transition has been so peaceful and delightful. I am so happy for you. The longest we have lived in one place is at our current home of 9 yrs. we bought Sea Cottage to remain the rest of our days but you never know. We could end up in a tiny beach shack by the sea. I live where you live...dreams do come true xo Kerrie

  43. I'm sure you live in one of the most beautiful places of your country, the view over the sea, the scenery of landscapes. A long time ago, the daughters were still at home we stayed with our small tents on a camping on the top of a cliff in Bridport with a view on Westport and of course the sea. It was wonderful but I remember also quite exciting because we had stormy weather at night and I was really a bit scared to be blown away with tent and all.

  47. So glad you are happy in your new home - that's a great shot of the barn owl!
I am amazed you hear skylarks - I have only ever heard them in high places like Maiden Castle.
As you may know from my recent posts, I have now been to Bridport and West Bay and appreciate what you see in them!
All the best for many more years :)
