In the Autumn mist

Was it a good idea setting out on a misty morning to view the last of the autumn hues of brown, gold, orange and crimson? The answer was most definitely yes!

Our destination was Forde Abbey in Dorset. The monastic abbey was built over 900 years ago. It remained an abbey for 400 years, before it was transformed into a family home. It also has a spectacular 30 acre garden including an aboretum.  Much of the landscaping originates in the earliest part of the 18th century. The avenue of  beech trees line the driveway and they provide a colourful welcome.

The mist just added to the atmosphere and the beauty, and the colour of the autumn foliage stood out against the greyness of the sky!

You can almost imagine one of the monks walking by (see video link here )

The walled garden was also still full of colour. If you are in the area in the next few weeks an added bonus is that there are free admissions to the gardens from Thursdays to Sunday's in November.

As we drove home we passed many villages where carved pumpkins stood guarding house entrances,
and awaiting at home pumpkin soup and homemade ginger cake. The colour of the seasonal food matching the colours of the hazel branches just outside the window.  Are you eating any seasonal food that matches the season?

Thank you for all the lovely comments in my last post. I was so glad that the Onion Johnnies bought back some long forgotten memories.

Wishing you a good week ahead.

  2. These pictures of Forde Abbey and surroundings are of an outstanding beauty. When I should have to choose a favorite I should mention the photo of the pond, 5th from above. It has it all: the round shape, wonderful autumn colours in the front, trees in a haze, the mirror lake.
    Have a nice new week!

  4. What a beautiful place Sarah. Yes that pesky mist is still with us today, but I think Forde Abbey would look spectacular no matter what the weather!
Not really eating anything seasonal, however soups are back on the menu after all the salads of the last season, with home made breads...oh so lovely.

  5. What a lovely tour, Sarah! This has been a brilliant fall here too. The golds just keep shining with the sunny days we have had! And nothing beats a weekend walk in the pile of leaves on the pathways. OH THE GLORY OF AUTUMN! Happy week! Anita

  8. Love the photo of the abbey in the mist. You captured the feel of the misty weather so well that it made your return to warm soup and ginger cake sound very welcome. We are inundated with pumpkins, apples, and root vegetables this time of year over the ocean in Maine. Rich autumn food is so satisfying. I will be making Caribbean pumpkin soup this week. Yum.

  9. I don't think the monks would have approved of some of those arty statues of skimpily-attired ladies!

  11. Those are possibly the finest autumn photos I have ever seen. Just stunning. What they depict is not only the colour but also the chill in the air when that fine mist descends (or ascends?) I love the avenue of majestic trees but best of all your first photo, of the lake beyond the scrunched autumn leaves. What a wonderful book cover this would make!

  17. What an amazing place. Is it still privately owned - there can't be many houses/abbeys of that size that haven't been handed over to a trust. It looks as if the gardens are lovely too. Juliex
