Some calm moments

As the sun set on Thursday evening we headed to Hive Beach at Burton Bradstock for a late evening stroll, it was a such a beautiful evening......

The highlight for me was suddenly hearing this bird singing mixed with the sounds of the waves lapping the shore....

We were unable to see the bird but it's song was strong, clear and beautiful. Many poets have described it's mournful tones and joyous sound. I have always longed to hear the nightingale sing, last year we took a walk in a wood at dusk, there was no bird song and the woods were so dark and eerie even Tavi wasn't keen to walk there! It is always when you aren't looking for something that you find it!

I was saddened to see the results of the referendum on EU membership and the chaos that has ensued. It seems to have divided the country and it is so sad that we can't stand and work together for the common good.

The EU is a long way from being perfect but the environmental legislation that has been passed has given us cleaner beaches and drinking water, less air pollution and greater wildlife protection. It will be even a huge step backwards if these standards are not upheld in the future.

  1. I love seeing pics of your beautiful beaches.

We too were saddened by the results- we were watching the results online and did not expect the referendum to pass.

  2. Sarah, the evening sky was beautiful and the sounds incredible. Inspiring!

  3. The leave vote could be disastrous for nature :( All the laws and protections we've had for the environment and nature in the last 35 years have come about through the EU so if we lose those things are really in a mess, amongst many other things.

Your photos are beautiful here as always, what a lovely evening walk!

  4. So lovely to hear the nightingale sing and thank you for the moments of calm. Much needed!

  5. So very beautiful the sky, the views to the sea and the cows in the valley. We were also disappointed by the result of the referendum, so bad for the economy.

  6. I do hope, that reason will prevail, for the environment.

  7. Your shots are always beautiful, I feel very really relaxed when ever I see them.

  8. My dear Sarah,
first of all I feel European and it is sad to see, that more than 50 % of the British people don´t feel the same.
Of course the EU is not perfect, so am I and maybe you too, but we live in peace for more than 70 years and that, I think, was only possible because of the EU. The result is a wrong signal in times where we all must stand together as Europeans with different roots. That makes us so wonderful, our continent so wonderful.
    Hugs for you, Barbara

  9. I keep reading blogs concerned about environmental issues from Brexit.

  10. Re Brexit: It is not necessarily the case that all EU legislation will be repealed, so it's possible that much of the Environmental legislation may be preserved. I hope so, anyway!

  12. More stunning photos Sarah. I have never heard a nightingale, you were so lucky. I too share your sentiments about the EU. Hopefully good will prevail. B x

  13. How wonderful to have heard a nightingale, especially when you weren't looking for one. I'm devastated about the referendum result. I really believe that we need the protection of European legislation for our wildlife and environment. In the past it's the only thing that saved them at times. Without the EU the future looks incredibly bleak. CJ xx

  14. Dearest Sarah, I hope and wish for the best for all of you, my British friends. Our worlds are becoming more chaotic, and it frightens me...especially when we the people (or those in power), hold the keys to success. WISHING YOU safety, hope, love and a future filled with goodness. I love the song of the nightengale!

  16. I hope all will be well. Hopefully, the environmental issues will remain a top priority for the lawmakers in England.

  17. The referendum result has opened a Pandora's box. Years and years of legal wrangling, making sure there are laws to fill the gaps where there were once EU laws (or not bothering and causing more problems) – all that money, all that bureaucracy... What a mess. I feel frustrated and sad about it all. Thank goodness, then, for the beauty around us – beaches, nightingales (how lucky you were to hear one!), sunsets, wildflowers. Thank you for sharing this lovely moment. Sam x

  18. The sound of the nightingale is wonderful - I always make sure I hear plenty of it each year. Sadly, though, this year I had to travel to hear it as we had no nightingales singing in the scrub over the back.
Your photos are lovely. Summer evenings by the coast are so special. I just hope in the new set up our natural environment is protected, but I do fear for it.

  19. I echo your concern and your feelings of sadness. I hope our fears for environmental changes are unfounded.
Your photos are beautiful. I can almost hear the waves on the shingle.

  20. Couldn't agree more re the referendum. So sad. Fingers crossed it isn't as bad as we fear.
How lucky to hear the nightingale though! Juliex

  25. It is always so peaceful and delightful to visit your blog and see your beautiful country through the lens of your camera. It's all such a long way from Southern California! I was interesting to hear the nightingale song; I don't think we have them here. But our mockingbirds sound somewhat like that. Wishing you a lovely week and weekend ahead.

  26. Your post is a calm in the storm, Sarah. Thanks for sharing your joy of hearing the nightingale sing! I continue to pray the Lord will cause those in authority to make wise and righteous decisions to protect the beauty we love and that we may know His peace. xx

  27. I have never heard a nightingale sing so thank you for that. Let's cross fingers that positive environmental legislation already in place won't be changed....the Brexit vote was a big surprise, even in far away Australia. Best wishes and thanks for the lovely photos.

  28. Wonderful to hear a nightingale! That is a real natural treasure isn't it. Looks as though you had a beautiful evening walk!

  29. Thank you putting up the recording of a Nightingale, for it has confirmed my suspicions that it is the bird which I hear at night singing in my local hedgerows here in Ireland.

Re Brexit:never in my wildest of dreams would I ever have believed it possible to orchestrate such a home grown piece of audacious buffoonery and then get the numbskulls to vote for their own downfall…. it is beyond belief that so many adults could ever be so stupid !
    I am absolutely astounded.

  30. Beautiful photo's of the sunset Sarah! The outcome of the British EU referendum was a shock to us as well. I think we all realise EU power and legislation should change, but leaving the EU is no solution. I think that if you really want to change things, both in the EU and Europe, you should do it 'together'. It's about uniting, not to turn people against each other.

    Have a lovely evening!

  31. You are so lucky to live in such a beautiful area, I can't quite believe the mess we are in. I know the people voted but sadly they are led by lairs and hypocrites so I shouldn't really be surprised! :( xxx
