Through the Garden gate October

October in the garden has bought us golden light and golden leaves.

Twinkle is out catching those warm rays of  sunshine.
But there are still reminders of summer to be found with roses still blooming....

and the cosmos and the ammi visnaga are still putting on a good show. It's amazing that two packets of seeds have provided us with so many flowers. The cosmos has been constantly flowering since July although it does involve doing regular deadheading to keep them going!

The purple Verbena Bonariensis, which survived the winter has also been flowering for four months and is perfect for giving a backdrop of additional colour. The garden is noticebly quieter with fewer insects visiting the flowers.

Our two apples trees now in the second year of planting have produced 12 apples. We have had a huge number of grapes that have been made into grape juice. I also tried roasting some and eating them with goats cheese, which was lovely.

The vegetable garden is beginning to look very empty. I always keep meaning to try growing Green manure, bur only remember about it once it is too late to plant! Has anyone tried it? I have been recently reading about No dig gardening, so maybe we shall buy in some manure and try that technique instead. In the empty raised beds we still have some salad crops, leeks and chard. Some salad and winter vegetables have been planted in the green house. Using the greenhouse during the winter for some crops was a success last year.

Thoughts have turned to spring and we have planted more bulbs in the hope they will brighten those colder days. I have been following Freda's tip since last week about doing 15 minutes gardening a day. It has been surprising how much you can get done in 15 minutes and the garden is already benefiting and so am I!

What have been the highlights in your garden in October?

Thank you for all your comments, I am trying to respond to them all. Our internet is playing up at the moment and sometimes it takes several attempts to load a page. Is anyone else experiencing this too? It seems to have got even worse since the last Windows 10 update! Technology is wonderful when it works but so frustrating when it doesn't!

Wishing you a good week ahead.

  1. You have so much beauty in the garden so late in the season. Here in PEI, everything is put to bed, or almost. We are doing our last garden clean-up today.

    Happy Hallowe'en!

  2. Your garden still looks gorgeous and your bounty of apples and grapes looks wonderful. Supposedly fewer weeds when you don't dig and till. I is hard to break the habit though.

  3. I'm impressed that you had 12 apples on second year trees. And I'm envious of the grapes. Your raised beds look about like mine--hardy leeks and mustards looking a little lonely. I too contemplate green manure but never seem to get it in on time. Maybe next year.

  4. Your garden is still looking lovely - I like the sound of roasted grapes with goats cheese.
I am not with Windows but I know that my brother has also been having lots of problems with the Windows 10 update too.

  6. I switched back from Windows 10 - no regrets! How lovely to have so many beautiful flowers still Sarah. And yes, isn't it surprising how much gets done in regular 15 minute sessions?

  7. Blue skies, something to eat from the garden, flowers to pick, and a cat in the sun.
We have both got that covered.

  8. Twinkle is looking beautiful in the golden light. I love the way you have grown the cosmos with ammi visnaga. It helps to prop them up and is a brilliant partner for them. Like you I'm thinking about what to grow in the veg patch next year. Something pest and disease resistant if that exists. Well done on all the fruit. Remind me how deep to plant my snowdrops. I'm sure you said something about putting them deeper to avoid the mice. B X

    1. The snowdrops should be 4 inches deep. I have tried to plant crocus bulbs as deep as I can so hopefully it will work for both of us! Sarah x

    2. Thanks Sarah, hopefully that should sort out my little micey friends and let me have snowdrops :)

  13. Ahhhh....Sarah, this is the first year that I've noticed how summer and fall have merged. We too still have some persistent flowers that are in full bloom that are competing with the brilliant colors of fall. How lovely is your fruit bowl!

  14. I love your fruit arrangement--such a pretty picture. You still have so many lovely flowers this late in the season!

  15. It's been so mild this autumn and lovely to see the blooms lasting so long. That rose is a beauty.

  16. Lovely to see your late blooming flowers, not to mention the apples and grapes...makes me think we should try a bit harder with fruit trees, but that would invite cockatoos into the garden all the more! Twinkle is a cutie, cats always catch the warmest spot in the garden.

  17. It's great to see so much colour still in the garden from both foliage and flowers. I never remember to sow green manure either, Sarah. But we have always had a good supply of manure down at the allotments. We don't dig, just clear the beds and top with a layer of manure

  19. It is lovely to see the late summer/early autumn flowers - although I believe a frost is forecast here this week. It is sad not to see so many bees and no butterflies around anymore.
After my computer problems this summer you have my sympathy!
