January skies

You may have thought I had hibernated without managing a post last week, instead it has been the opposite with so much going on!

January is such a good month to snuggle up indoors in the warm especially when it is grey and cold outside and think of those green spring days. Green has been very much in my mind lately as I'm organising a fortnight in the Spring to raise environmental awareness. With reports this week that 2016 was the hottest year on record, and the average westerners carbon emissions destroying 30 square meters of Arctic ice each year, Governments and all of us need to do more to reduce our carbon footprint.

Our home faces east and we always get an advanced warning if we will get a good sunrise. As I drew the blinds the other morning the orange glow tempted Tavi and I to forgo breakfast and head to Burton Bradstock for a walk along the beach.

It was cold but such a beautiful morning and we weren't the only ones to appreciate it.

I am definitely a morning person, are you better first thing in the morning or later in the day?

On other days despite some sunshine there has almost been a grey tinge to the view!

The NHS has been in the headlines over the last couple of weeks. Has anyone been watching The Hospital on BBC 2?  The way the NHS will deliver services in the future is out for public consultation. If you care about the services in your area I do urge you to have a look at the proposals and let them know what you think. Thank you so much for the best wishes for my husband he does now have a date in early February for his operation, we are counting the days and keeping our fingers crossed that it goes ahead.

Wishing you a good week, next time I promise I won't be on my soap box!
Sarah

  2. Your sunrise shots are stunning Sarah.
I missed your last post so sorry to hear your husband has an operation ahead of him. With best wishes that it goes well and relieves him of the discomfort. Take care, both of you.

  3. Beautiful pictures, as always! The beach shot is stunning. I am definitely a morning person, especially since I'm usually in bed before the night hits.:)

  4. What a beautiful way to start the day. The sunrise is wonderful. I hope that all goes well for your husband and that he makes a good and swift recovery.

  5. Looking at your serene coastal photos dressed in soft pinks, yellows and gold, it makes me feel that all is well in the world, but of course we all not it is not.
I watched the NHS tv programme and was shocked by it - something is seriously wrong when half a dozen top surgeons spend so much time organising and planning a big operation only to find that it has to be cancelled at the very last moment due to shortage of beds.
I love being up and about early in the morning, there is something special about that time of day, but alas it does not happen much.
Good luck to your husband and fingers crossed that your hospital does not have to cancel.

    1. Having worked in the NHS for over 30 years, it is still shocking to see the waste and frustration caused through lack of beds. In the last eighteen months it has been a problem throughout the year rather than just in the winter. With an aging population it is only likely to get worse.

  6. Dear Sarah,

So lovely to catch up with you again and see your wonderful photos - love the beach ones of the prints in the sands and the beautiful sunrise. I too had not read the last post and sorry to hear about your husband - do hope he can get the surgery soon. Sounds very much like our health system with long waiting lists.
Sending hugs and wishing you a happy week

  7. Somehow I missed your last post and am so sorry to learn that your husband has been ill, but glad to know surgery has been scheduled, and I do pray that he heals rapidly and completely. Thanks for sharing your lovely photos, Sarah. I am an early riser as long as I get to bed at a reasonable hour the night before :) xx

  8. Glorious sunrise, I'm very much a morning person as well, I would have been out there with you enjoying the light. Fingers crossed your husband's operation goes ahead. Things are difficult with the NHS, but I hope it is all dealt with before too long. Well done you on organising the environmental fortnight, I am on my feet applauding you. I shall look forward to hearing how it goes. CJ xx

  10. I am glad your husband has the date for surgery. Hope it goes ahead on timeand is successful. Hernias can be so painful and disruptive of one's life.

I share your concern about the environment. Carbon pricing is on the horizon here. I hope it encourages investment in renewable energy.

  11. Your photographs are just beautiful. I’m definitely a morning person and can’t understand why anyone would want to sleep the best part of the day away.

I have been watching The Hospital but must admit I didn't think to look at the proposals. I will now though.

Enjoy the week, frost and cold today but still beautiful. x

  12. As always your photos are stunning. I am a morning person, too, and can't image anyone not going out to see the sunrises you have over the water. It is hard to imagine having to wait for a hernia operation as your husband has. I'm glad the wait isn't too much longer.

  13. I worked for the NHS for 20 years and have been retired for 6 years. Watching The Hospital brought back to me all the frustrations of lack of beds and cancelled ops.

  14. I haven't seen The Hospital on tv but can easily imagine the pitfalls. I've had dealings with the NHS both in a previous admin job and with my mother's care in hospital; red tape and bureaucracy has overtaken common sense, often doubling the cost of services provided - I'm incredulous, and support my mum's view that "it wouldn't have happened in Matron's day!". (Mum was a theatre sister in her time.) Your wonderful photos of the skies would have had me heading out of the door as well, so beautiful and I'm very envious of your walks. Caro x

    1. It certainly wouldn't have happened in Matron's Day! My parents had a friend that was a Matron too and she wouldn't have stood for any nonsense either! Sarah x

  15. Beautiful morning scenes here! I wish I could be a morning person but I am most definitely not! I take after my dad and his mum, I've always been a night owl!

  16. Beautiful photos of the sunrise, I love being up early to see the soft morning light. Good for you promoting environmental issues, climate change is well and truly happening...and I think gardeners and people who are interested in the environment see it first.

  19. Wonderful to hear that you have an environmental conscience. There isn't much of that around now a days and the prevalent thought is that environment changes are political "things" from the "other side." We live in a time that no one bothers to think for themselves. Sad! I am glad that your husband has a surgery date. I will keep him on my prayers.

  21. Hello Sarah,
I love those captures of your morning on the beach. How beautiful, and how far removed from what I'm used to living in a town, and doing the daily commute.

I became asthmatic four years ago, it was out of the blue, and I'm convinced it's pollution from traffic and smog in the air. Luckily, I don't live too far away from some gorgeous areas where I can breathe in a good lung full of clean air.

    Thank you for sharing.

    1. Our daughter has had asthma since a child so I can appreciate your problems. Friends of ours always notice the quality of the air when they sit. They live beside a busy road and it is so different! Sarah x
