A change of scene

We have just returned from a wonderful week's holiday. It was so good to just chill out and relax but as you can see we couldn't keep away from the sea - we did add some mountains in too just to provide a different scene!

Our destination was a cosy and very comfortable Welsh cottage dating back to the 1700's on the island of Anglesey, which is located off the north-west coast of Wales.

It was situated beside the coast path and although the sea was at least 10 minutes walk away it had sea views from all of the rooms.

Our neighbours were a huge flock of sheep and a herd of cows

and we were surprised to look out of the window on the first morning  and see two guinea fowl sitting on the wall!

We took a trip a boat trip around Puffin Island and we were delighted to actually see some puffins and a seal as well as numerous shags and cormorants and on an evening walk we were so excited to come across a pod of sea porpoises swimming close to this wonderful lighthouse. We returned there again on several other evenings but they never reappeared.

Angelsey has always provided much of the food for Wales, inland it is relatively flat. Its coastline stretches for 125 miles and we only visited a fraction of the many beaches on offer. Tavi was in his element as he adores sand and sea!

We found it surprisingly quiet considering that we are already in the holiday season, as you can see we had many of these huge beaches almost to ourselves!

All holidays have to come to an end, it is always sad to leave but at least we are left with some wonderful memories. There are so many fantastic places to visit both in this country and aboard - if only we had the time and money to visit everywhere on our wish lists! Has anyone else been to Anglesey?

Hope you are keeping well, wishing you a happy week.

  1. What beautiful pictures and what a gorgeous place to visit this Anglesey must be. I do not have a budget for travel, so I love tagging along with my sister bloggers. Thanks for the tour.

  3. Never Sarah, but it is so gorgeous. It does look like you had the place to yourselves. I bet you are never far from the sea in GB.

  4. Spent many holidays on 'Ynys Mon' in years gone by though have not walked its beaches for many a year. Tis a shame as it is only fifty minutes up the road for me and your post has me dreaming of freshly caught mackerel cooked over driftwood flames, washed down with home made cider and watching the sunset kiss the horizon.

  5. Your photos are gorgeous! I spent a day in Anglesey last year, mostly rockpooling at Treardurr Bay but it's some I need to visit properly one day. The cottage you stayed in looks delightful!

  6. It looks as if you have just enjoyed a wonderful holiday on Anglesey Sarah, and returned with some lovely images.
I used to go there when younger with my parents who loved going to Wales. I used to find it exciting crossing over the Menai Bridge into what seemed to my childhood self like another country.

  8. Dearest Sarah and Tavi, good morning! That Welsh cottage is darling. My husband and I have enjoyed watching the British Netflix show, "Escape to the Country" - we saw many lovely homes/cottages in the English and Welsh countryside that made us swoon. You are so fortunate to have these so close to you!

The ocean is always a great place to be to enjoy summer holiday. Best to you and your family!

  9. Now that looks like the perfect place to relax. It's surprising--and wonderful--that the beaches were so deserted. I love having sheep and cows nearby--it's so entertaining to watch their social interactions.

  10. All your photos are beautiful but I especially like the last one with the silhouettes of the cows with the setting sun!

  13. How timely that you should post about Anglesey. We are booked for a cottage stay in Caernarfon in September and Anglesey is on our list of to do's. Lovely photos Sarah. Your holiday looked wonderful. Hopefully our weather is as good. B x

  14. Anglesey looks a wonderful place for a relaxing holiday ... I just don't know where we would begin choosing a holiday in Britain, you are really spoilt for choice. It's great that Tavi loves the sea & sand, our last little dog didn't like the sea much, much to our daughter's disappointment.

  15. Lovely photos of beautiful Wales And yes, I can say I've been to Anglesey, but only for a day! I wish it could have been longer. I was finishing up a trip to Wales from my home in the USA. I dream of returning. My favorite apron is from Roberts's Castle Bakery.

  16. Beautiful photos Sarah! I am in the throes of moving (in Australia) from a very chilly southern climate (Canberra) to the warmth of the Gold Coast. I'd love to buy a little cottage with a sea view, but sadly those over here (besides costing a million dollars or more) just don't look like the ones on Escape to the Country! I shall keep looking! Enjoying your blog.

  18. Anglesey is just my favourite place. My Grandmother came from Holyhead so I have visited every year since I was little (although she is long gone). I never get bored of it. The wide open spaces, the unspoilt beaches, the bracing winds. It's magic. xx

  19. It's a beautiful place!! What a gorgeous cottage! It looks natural and so untouched. Hope it stay like this for many more years to come. When a place gets too many tourists it begins to deteriorate. Keep this place a secret! Glad you got to rest and enjoy the sea!

  20. It looks like you found a wonderful place for a holiday! I've been to Wales, but not to Anglesey. Your photos are all beautiful, but I especially love the one with the wildflowers in the foreground.

  25. I had a holiday there when I was a child. (I'm talking well over half a century ago!) I recall the cottage that we stayed in as looking exactly like yours. We went with another family and I was the youngest of three children. We loved it because we were free to run wild all about the place.

  26. Haven't been to Anglesey, but have been to Wales many times! I love it as I have asthma and the air is so clean and fresh there. If I had the time and the money I would visit a few times a year.

Thank you for sharing with us, your images are lovely.

  31. Hi Sarah, we have been at Angelsey two times, it is so silent and wonderful. First time we had a flat in an old Armybuildung, but it was very noisy - a lot of familys.
The second time we come for an daytrip, do you know the gardencenter with the delicious lemon cream cake?

    Thanks for your memories.

  32. Looks like you had a wonderful holiday. Such beautiful scenery. I am quite jealous of your visit to Puffin island. We tried to see puffins and porpoise a couple of years ago in Scotland but it was so wet we couldn't get to the island. Looks like you has very nice weather.

  33. Well, this post of yours has brought back some memories for me! We holidayed in Moelfre for a few years when I was about 10 years old. Is that Moelfre in your photo? I remember it so well with my Mum & Dad and Granddad too - and our boxer who was called Myfanwy - Fan for short! I must venture over the Menai Straits again one day - thanks for the lovely photos.
