On the Yorkshire coast

Back in June we decide to visit another part of the British coastline and stayed for a week in Whitby in North Yorkshire. It was the first time we had visited Yorkshire and we were very impressed with the beautiful landscape and having arrived there was plenty to see without having to travel far.

We initially booked the holiday last Autumn - this was after we had ordered a new electric car with an anticipated arrival date of September 2019. At the beginning of December we were informed that the car was available before Christmas and having taken it ,we were then concerned about the complications of recharging the car on the way and during our stay! The car does about 280 miles (450km) between recharges. The journey was 350 miles (563km). Even though our cottage was not located near a car parking space we managed it without too many hiccups (apart from forgetting the password for one of the recharging apps!) our total travelling getting there and back amazingly cost us just £4!

With the Gothic remains of Whitby Abbey, connections with Captain Cook and Dracula, narrow streets, a history of ship building, fishing, whitby jet and popular as an Edwardian tourist destination there was lots to explore and admire in Whitby!

We enjoyed travelling along the coast and discovering small coastal villages. This was Runswick Bay, we loved the quirky cottages clinging to the cliffs and huge sandy beaches to run along. ( that's Tavi not us!)

Further along the coast in Staithes we came across a valerian  plant covered in fluttering Painted Lady butterflies. it was quite a sight!

You could just imagine fishermen returning after a fishing trip. The steep climb must have kept them fit!

The weather was mixed but we did enjoy some amazing sunsets.

The highlight of the holiday was the walk 8 miles along the coast to Robin Hood's Bay.

Look at all the birds nesting along the cliff edge!

We thought we deserved an ice-cream at the end of the walk!

Our final day included a trip to Scarborough, which including a free recharge at Lidl and another walk along a beach before heading back towards Whitby and to the beautiful hidden Falling Foss Tea garden. We were lucky enough to get in one of the last orders before they closed early for a wedding!

Finally a view of the cottage, it was a fantastic holiday I just wished I had not forgotten to recharge the camera before leaving home - most of these pictures were taken with my mobile phone. It's never had so much use, I rarely use it for phone calls or messages!

Hope you are all enjoying the season and have also managed to get away for a few days.

  1. Fabulous photos even if they were on the phone. Amazing your travel expenses were only £4. We trying to decide on a replacement car, sounds like electric is the way to go. Glad you enjoyed such a beautiful part of the country. B x

  2. Hi Sarah - you have captured the Yorkshire coast so well - this is where I spent a lot of my childhood holidays and weekends out and about. We too went to Runswick Bay for the day recently with my mum - it may have been at the same time as you - perhaps we passed each other along one of the winding pathways through the jumble of cute cottages! It is one of my all time favourite places - glad you enjoyed my home county and such a cheap journey. x

  5. I don't have a phone with a camera myself but regardless these are love photos.
Do you mind me asking how long it take you to recharge your car. I have read quite a few conflicting reports about getting them recharged and how many miles they do.
We are fortunate that we have so many completely different and pretty places to visit in our country, and each one has its own unique qualities to admire and enjoy. That particular area of Yorkshire is somewhere that I like too.

    1. My husband did lots of research before buying a car and we ended up with a Hyundai Kona, like you we don't usually travel long distances. The recharge time can vary depending on the type of charger. When we use the one at home it takes about 8 hours to charge 20 -100%. On a fast charger it will take about 1 hour 15 mins. As we have solar panels at home these are used to recharge the car wherever possible. The number of miles used depends on time of year , driving mode and speed but is usually around 250 -280.

  6. Fabulous photos! We've been to Whitby and along the coast lots of times and we love it. We didn't go in the abbey, just the gift shop. The tea shops are always a treat. If you go again may I suggest you ride the NYMR steam train. It runs between Whitby and Pickering and it's wonderful! Best, Jane x

    2. I'm so glad you went on the train. Goathland station is lovely and still famous for being in Heartbeat and for being in the first Harry Potter film too. Grosmont and Mallyan Spout are wonderful :)

  7. Oh Sarah, we are in love with your country. Blogging started me on a true appreciation of places I'd never been to, but in the last few years, we've been watching Escape to the Country and has fallen in love with your world. We so hope to get out there one day!

  8. It looks like a wonderful holiday.

I love the idea of an electric car. It is difficult to get a hybrid here.

  11. What a lovely holiday with beautiful pictures. I have very fond memories of visits to that part of England. I once stayed at Ravenscar and walked toWhitby along the glorious coast. On the same holiday I visited Goathland and by chance they were filming Heartbeat that day, Eleanor Bron was sitting in the same tearoom I visited!

  12. And isn't it wonderful to travel long distance in peace and quiet! Or to enjoy listening to music. Or to hear a snippet of conversation as you drive past. Your Lidl, our Constantia Village mall.
