Through the Garden Gate May 2020

It has been magnificent in the May garden, I usually feel June is the best month in the garden but with all the sunshine, the plants have really come on, although we have had to spend lots of time watering! With time to spare with the lockdown, it has been a pleasure rather than a chore!

We planted this Gertrude Jekyll rose last Autumn, I wish I could share its scent with you, as well as its mass of beautiful flowers!

Looking over the garden gate we can see the dramatic leaves and flowers of the elder Sambucus Nigra underplanted with Winchester Catherdal rose, on the pergola the grapevine hasn't yet produced the dense foliage that provides us with welcome shade from the sun!

The Grapevine

I bought this white Clematis Montana from Sarah Raven a few years ago. We had previously had a pink Clematis Montana that took over the trellis in our previous garden. As this is in a pot this is much more manageable. We have had an abundance of flowers with a wonderful scent.

A collection of pots and what looks like a snail climbing up one! Why do you always notice extra details once you have taken a photo? The slugs and snails have not been so much in evidence with the drier conditions.  As we have been eating more eggs we have used the crushed eggshells as a deterrent, it has worked well on some of the plants.

We love geraniums and have quite a collection of different ones in the garden. We bought this one form a croft museum in Anglesey two years ago - it had no name. It is always lovely to look at a plant and be reminded of past holidays, events or friends.

Granny bonnets (aquilegia) and cow parsley

In the back garden, the Euphorbia has been filling the borders with colour.

From the bedroom window in the early morning sunshine there are views of the cutting borders. The red and yellow geums and chives and wallflowers providing the colour this month.

There has been lots of wildlife in the garden too, this baby blue tit has become a regular visitor, it was quite difficult to take a picture of it as it flittered from one plant to another!

What have been the highlights in your garden this month?

It is always wonderful to see other gardens from around the world and share our love of gardening. If you want to join in with Through the garden gate please let me know in the comments below and I will add you below.
Hope you are all staying well and safe.

  1. So much to love in your garden this month. The aquilegia with the cow parsley is lovely. The roses too are doing well already. I’m wondering if the blue geranium is Johnson Blue; such a gorgeous colour. B x

    1. Your garden is fantastic this month too. We have Johnson Blue elsewhere in the garden this geranium is lighter in colour than that.

    2. Your May garden is lovely, Sarah. I think your geranium is 'Rozanne' -- I have it but no blooms for another month. We have a pergola with a grape vine, too. Unfortunately, the grapes here are loved by the spotted lantern fly -- a very destructive new insect that I'm afraid will arrive in my garden soon. I love white flowers and must look for a clematis like yours. Thanks for hosting. P. x

  3. I've had trouble sending a comment, so trying one more time. I loved your post, especially since we intended visiting your area, and along the coast in April this year....what a pity to miss it. Lovely to see blogs instead. Tavi looking as cute as ever......keep well and enjoy your summer.

  4. Your garden looks perfect. I wish I could set a while and enjoy the scents. I don't see weeds in other's gardens but notice every mistake in mine. My vegetable garden is out and now I'm turning my attention to my flowers and adding some to the empty spots around the vegetables.
Please add me to your list.

  13. Lovely pictures as always, Sarah. We have several of the perennial geraniums in our garden and I particularly like the fine markings on the petals. They are also popular with bees.

  15. Your flowers look spectacular. We've had a cold, slow spring so are way behind you. I've been thinking of planting a Gertrude Jekyll and I think your photo and description convinced me. Gorgeous.
