Returning Home

How many places have you called home? I have lived in about 15 locations and all of them have had left a marked impression on me, through different stages in life, and all of them I have revisited at one time or another.

Some of them have changed almost beyond recognition, some have remained much the same and other places look much smaller than you remember depending on the age you were when you lived there such as my old primary school.

This morning we took a walk around Littlebredy where I lived for a few years and apart from enjoying the scenery we were delighted to meet a Little Egret who was obviously very much at home in its surroundings. It didn' t seem to be at all bothered by us and Tavi and just flew over to perch on the bridge close-by. Egrets seem to be more common now - I don't ever remember seeing them when we lived here (just found out that they first appeared in numbers around 1989).

Despite the first heavy frost having already melted down by the sea, the temperature guage in the car fell as we headed inland. The smell of the wood smoke filled the valley accompanied by the sound of falling water from the waterfall, which was accompanied by the sound of the village church bells.

Autumn is starting to fade with fewer leaves now remaining on the trees and the windfall apples are left for the wildlife and the temperatures are starting to fall. Before heading home for a warm bowl of homemade soup I took a final peak at the house and garden that was once home and remembered how life was then.

See you later in the week for 'Through the garden gate' you are welcome to take pictures from your garden and join in too.

  1. I have been back to see places I live...fortunately I went back to my first childhood home when I first came back to the UK... sadly it has now been demolished and five houses have been built on the property instead. Such a shame as it was a lovely bungalow with a super large garden.

Other places I have lived have changed significantly as well...not always good to go back.

Beautiful area though in your post.

  2. Beautiful place!! We also have lived in a few different places. Brazil,Zimbabwe-Africa and Chile S.A. We have lived in different states here in the U.S. Your place in this photo has beautiful buildings, it reminds of England. There is something interesting to the eye to see all the apples in the ground turning back to nature.

  3. My husband has been back to look at our Camps Bay house (and the one where I grew up) but I loathe going back. One of the reasons I chose False Bay was no Remember When burden, and a fresh start.

My garden gate will be coming ... bit late maybe.

  5. Your photos are beautiful. Those homes look mysterious and magical too. I have lived in three places - I couldn't imagine 15. It sounds so adventurous to me.

  6. Such a beautiful place to live, the English landscape attracts me enormously. A friend of mine, also an England fan, said once: 'we are born on the wrong place', lol, may be but I do love my own place too. 15 different places that's a lot, I just come to 5.

  7. I've also led a fairly transient life until I came to rest in London (very unintentionally!) as my Dad was in the Fleet Air Arm so the family travelled with him. I don't generally look back but I'd love to go back to Yorkshire where I once lived and to Key West in Florida. Is the house with the green door where you lived? It's very beautiful and in a lovely area. x

    1. No the cottage where I lived is in the final picture above the wall garden. The wall garden was mainly full of fruit varieties then. Sarah x

  8. A wonderful place to call home! I remember visiting my first school and being amazed at how low the school wall was. Back in the day I couldn’t see over it. I must have read the same article about little egrets. Now very prolific in jersey back in the 1980’s very few in number. B x

  10. Beautiful photos from your walk around Littlebredy. I've lived in five different states: three in the South and two out west. I'd love to visit Arizona where our first daughter was born soon!

Thanks again for sharing the beauty of your former hometown. It's so lovely!

  11. What a wonderful walk down memory lane. Beautiful.

I've gone back and discovered the orchards gone, replaced by houses and apartments. The towering banks of the gully we climbed as we played King of the Mountain are actually no higher than my ceiling!

  12. Hello Sarah,
Your photos are spectacular. They look like something I would see in a magazine. Thank you for sharing.
Also, the Mexican Sunflowers really were the hit for the butterflies, bees and birds. It was fun watching them all flying around the plant.

  13. I can't bear to go back to my favourite (a 200 year old cottage on a Scottish moor) but have been back to others and found it a strange experience, not always sure it's a good thing for me, but I've been lucky to live in some lovely places. You clearly have too Sarah!

  14. There is such a beauty in Autumn all round the world.. and blogging gives a window into so many different worlds. Your photos took me straight back to story books I loved as a child. I hope you enjoyed your trip down memory lane.
We see a lot of Egrets about these days but I don't remember ever seeing them years ago.

  15. We took a drive recently through the place where I grew up and I was disappointed. It had changed so much. I like where I live now better than any other place I have lived

  16. I lived in 15 different houses my first 18 years and only 3 for the last 48 ½ years! I've gone back to see several and they DO look so much smaller than I remember. Lots of other changes, too. One is now a parking lot. I used Google maps to view several others using street view. Lovely scenes in your photos.

  17. Dear Sarah,

Loved seeing all your beautiful photos and isn't Autumn such a great time of the year with all the pretty colours. I have lived in six different homes and yes, it is fun looking back on the memories.
Hope you have a lovely week

  18. What a wonderful post. I had three homes, this included. We are in this age now where we are often looking backwards.

  19. I've only lived in two homes... my childhood home until I was 23 and then my parents sold it and moved :( I've been in my second home for 11 years now and soon to be moving on to my third home!

You took some lovely photos on your visit. We don't get many egrets up here - I saw one, a few years ago and was so excited!

  20. Littlebredy looks a delightful spot especially that wonderful waterfall tumbling down over the mossy stones.
What a lot of locations you have lived in! I have lived in very few in comparison - only 7 but each one widely scattered across the country including Scotland.
