Through the Garden Gate December 2021

Welcome to the last visit Through the Garden Gate in 2021. Usually a visit into the garden at this time of year is quite dull or sparse but this year we have been treated to a huge splash of golden colour from this Golden Bush Daisy (Euryops pectinatus) native to South Africa. It has been strange looking past the lit up Christmas tree located inside the window and out to these daisies. However much I love both, they don't seem to go together!

Another delight this month has been our Daphne Odora. It is festooned with around 50 of its highly scented flowers, we bought it during the first lockdown in 2019. It had one flower on it last year and it was battered by high winds earlier in the year so it is good to see it has survived and thrived!

Looking back at the garden last year we already had hellebores in flower, they are only now starting to reappear, the Euphorbia Wulfenii are looking very majestic and architectural.

How was your garden in 2021? Looking back at ours, the gardening conditions have been milder and wetter, our water barrels only ran dry once this year. We seemed to have filled the garden with even more plants during the various lockdowns and our spring bulb planting has increased each year too.

Both our children having moved into houses with gardens this year and it has been lovely to give them cuttings and see their interest in gardening increasing. They always complained they visited too many garden centres/nurseries and gardens when they were children and now they are starting to do the same!

When I was growing up in Germany New Year was always celebrated in Germany with fireworks - a long time before it became popular elsewhere so I will finish this post with some spectacular colours from our recent visit to Abbotsbury Gardens. It was wonderful to enjoy looking at the plants in a  completely different way and really appreciate their structure and texture!

Wishing you a very good and healthy New Year in both your garden and in your lives.

Thank you so much for both participating and visiting all the gardens that take part each month, it has been especially good to connect and visit gardens virtually all around the world during these strange and isolating times. If you want to join in with Through the garden gate please let me know in the comments below and I will add you below.

  2. I absolutely love the last picture. It looks like a dazzling firework's explosive starburst in the air!

Looking back, my garden has also changed. The trailer loads of horse manure have transformed it from rock hard clay to loose loam. It has made the biggest difference. The weather here (southern middle Tennessee, USA, Zone 7a) has been milder and wetter also which was a blessing. My gardening focus for this next year will be to be able to provide a large part of our food for my family. This past year, the food prices in my area have almost doubled and there is no end in sight to the rising costs. I think my biggest achievement has been the knowledge I have accumulated about gardening. I do feel ready to face the challenges ahead.

    Happy New Year everybody!

  8. Lovely to think you have nurtured a love of gardens in your children. I love the golden daisy bush. We have been trying to get one for a while. There is one in our lane I may have to take a snipping of 😹. Well done on the daphne, I can imagine the scent on a warmer day. It’s a wonderful time of year when you can sit and plan for next year. Wishing you all the best this year. B x

  10. Our children were the same, Sarah. When they were little they joined in with gardening, but lost interest as they grew older, now have their own gardens. Its good to see them taking that interest now.
I've been quite poorly for a few months, diagnosed with Rheumatoid arthritis and lost interest in blogging. Hope to get back into some gentle gardening and start blogging again soon as I start on treatment for the RA. Have been enjoying reading your blog posts
