Windy grey days

After finishing work for the weekend I went out to the shed to get the Christmas tree and the shed door was nearly blown off it's hinges with the strength of the wind! The greenhouse door blew open and one of the panes of glass slipped down. We were woken two night running as gusts of wind howled down the garden, shaking the windows. Part of the sea front looked as if it was covered in snow as particles of sea foam blew through the air. How has the weather been for you over the weekend ? It looks bad up in the north of England with storms and flooding.

Wind surfer off Exmouth beach

Yesterday we were attending a concert an hour's car journey away in Exmouth. Gusts of wind buffeted the car as we drove there, it was good to know we had treated ourselves to a night away and wouldn't have to make the return journey in the dark and the wind!

The concert by one of our favorite performers Show of Hands was as always superb, and we thought of those who 3 weeks ago in Paris had been enjoying a similar evening that ended in such tragic circumstances. We had a good night's sleep in a lovely hotel and just had to walk off the cooked English breakfast. The wind had fallen slightly during the night but the board and kite surfers were taking advantage of the conditions!

There were piles of sand that had blown on to the esplanade.

Exmouth is on the East Devon coast where the River Exe meets the sea. It is Devon's oldest holiday resort and has many lovely buildings built in the Georgian,Victorian and Edwardian era. It reminds me a little of  Weymouth (where we used to live) with the sandy beach and the Georgian buildings lining the front.

There are signs of Christmas- one of the trees in the large gardens of these houses was decorated for the season.

Otterton

We took the coastal route home and stopped to admire the cottages in Otterton and buy a loaf of bread from the working mill and craft centre.

And take one last look at the sea before heading home.........

  3. Did I type to you about the time years ago when the wind at the beach caught the front doors of our mini van and bent them back which would have been so costly to fix that the insurance ruled that the car had been totaled? When I first saw sea foam blowing around on the beach it confused me. I thought that someone had dumped soap in the water which unfortunately would not be so far fetched today. Thanks for your lovely posts and good wishes, Sarah!

  4. Sarah, Otterton is a beautiful town! Your pictures are beautiful, like always. I love to visit your blog.
In Germany in my Region we need it cold, but it is still warm outside. Very bad - all the pest in the garden is still alive.

  6. Oh the winds have been forceful here too - you feel so helpless against it don't you. The poor old coast certainly takes a battering - you were very brave to go out in it and glad you enjoyed the show. There are so many lovely villages down there. Very dramatic shots of the sea. In our village the wind has tossed a horse shelter which is now upsidedown - oh dear.

  8. Exmouth looks lovely even in the wind...there is always something special about a seaside town out of season. Well done for escaping for the weekend. It really helps to recharge the batteries. We have only just returned home to Jersey and like you the wind is howling...it certainly made for bumpy flying on the journey home. Hope you have a good week. Barbara x

  9. It's been a wee bit blustery here too!! OUr wall blew over again. Really should get that fixed properly x

  10. Except for the sand on the esplanade I'm glad to see there's been no damage to those lovely cottages so near the water. I've heard about the wind you all have been having lately! You seem to be taking it in stride. I suppose living on an island and being so close to the water you expect "blustery" days. Your photo of the spray of water on the rock brings me right down to the beach with you!

  11. GASP. SWOON! I love your rough and rugged coast, Sarah. We have been enjoying the show, BROADCHURCH, and the scenes on the coast are just stunning. And your exploits are always fun to follow, full of cottages, sea shores, little white westies, enchantment. ENJOY the days of Christmas my dear!

  12. It's been wild and windy here too – grey sky and sea covered in scudding white horses. I always pity people on the ferries when it's like this. Exmouth and Otterton look lovely places to visit. Have a good week Sarah, and I hope the sun comes out.

  13. Sounds like you had a lovely weekend despite the weather!

It was a very, very windy weekend here (http://louises30dayswild.blogspot.co.uk/2015/12/day-188.html !) but not wet for us, we were just south of the rain.

  14. Beautiful, but the skies are so very, very gray. Are you getting any sun at all?

Also, I apologize if my comment repeats. I am in the endless loop of publish, disappear, publish, disappear, publish, I give up, Blogger/WordPress war (or whatever it is--very frustrating).

  15. Even when the weather is awful, scenery can look impressive. These days I think we have become more conscious of the powers of Nature. Storms and heavy rain seem to be a more frequent feature of life!

  17. Your amazing pictures do make me rather homesick Sarah!
Even though you did get bad weather down there, it seems you were let off lightly, compared to "up North". I'm originally from Yorkshire, family and friends are telling me what a terrible time they are having.

  19. Hi Sarah, it's very windy in Southsea as well although I haven't been down to the beach to see whether all the pebbles have been washed up on the promenade yet. Although beautiful and wild looking, the sea can be treacherous as well...lovely photos of pretty cottages, glad you enjoyed your break. Sharon x

  20. So pleased to read you enjoyed your getaway ...
The weather recently has been un-seasonably warm, but some areas of the UK have had terrible weather and conditions, as Storm Desmond passes through.

I saw the recent pictures of the white foam in West Bay, but going further North ... Lancaster, Cumbria have had it very bad haven't they. We never know what nature will throw at us!

Take Care - Have a good week.

    All the best Jan

  22. Getting to our favourite Christmas concert this year was hairaising - floods and landslides and rough ferry crossings! But worth it. Glad you enjoyed yours too!

  23. A weekend away is a great tonic whatever time of year, it recharges your batteries and sets you up for the week ahead. It is years since I have been to Exmouth even though we were a few miles away in Exeter the other weekend. Now that I have seen you photos I realise that we should have made time to visit there.
I cant begin to imagine how awful it must have been for the people in Cumbria, I heard tonight that a herd of 22 cows had been washed away, but were found today 20 miles away happily grazing!

    1. We did enjoy Exmouth ,Topsham is also a good place to visit and stay. I'm glad the cows we found and the story had a happy ending. We saw a cow washed on the beach during 2014 winter storms. It must be heart breaking to see your home and business damaged by the floods. Sarah x

  25. Really enjoyed seeing your photos of Exmouth, we visit every year and love it there. We also love Show of Hands and last saw them perform in Salisbury. Otterton Mill is another place we like to visit when we are in that part of the country and their artisan bread is delicious, xx

  27. Dear Sarah!

As always it's such a joy to watch your beautiful photos and read your interesting post. You've such a beautiful blog sweet Sarah and it sounds like you had a lovely time in Exmouth.
I'm glad to hear you're all ok and that you haven't suffered to badly from the storms and flooding lately. We've had our fair share here in Sweden as well and the last storm we had was a really bad one. I really thought the roof would lift this time. So scary! Lots and lots of trees fell but thankfully no one was harmed. So we were lucky.

Take care sweet Sarah and I hope the strong winds will calm down for you now.♥

  28. These photos of your little trip are so lovely! That area looks very picturesque – I would so much love to go back to the UK as it has been too long. The weather here is better though. For some reason (climate change?) it has been unusually warm here. By Sunday we should be in the mid 70 F (23.5C) and even though Georgia is not that cold usually, this is quite warm for December. I was feeding the birds today in just a tee-shirt. But I would not mind wearing a coat if I could walk along your beach!

  29. What a wonderful mini-holiday, Sarah! I've seen sea foam going through the air once, when hiking along the coast of Wales. It's a very strange thing to observe. Your photos are all beautiful. Thanks for sharing them with us!
