Through the Garden Gate May 2019

Welcome to through the garden gate and there is lots to enjoy this month!

Let's start by looking at this Patty's Plum Oriental Poppy, papaver orientale, the rain always seems to appear very shortly after the blooms appear damaging the flowers, so it is always worth capturing it before that happens.

A view of the garden capturing the early morning light with this huge plant of chives in the foreground.

In the cutting garden the honesty is just finishing as the yellow geum and borage take centre stage.

Everything is growing fast and as usual we are going to have a glut of lettuce leaves, time to get the recipes books out to come up with imaginative ways to eat it! Has anyone got any good suggestions?

I always treat myself to some Sarah Raven plants each year, some of which will reappear again such as these sweet williams below. I also copy some of her ideas, this year I have planted heliotrope cherry pie mixed with nemesia. It is a winning combination, which has been looking and smelling so good on the table outside. We have to use a trough instead of individual pots because of the strong wind that visits us!

The azalea to be the same height as the conservatory and after a year of sulking we have been rewarded with a mass of purple flowers. The euphorbia in the border provides a good colour contrast, before the border erupts in another layer of flowers.

The fluffy flowerheads of the thalictum aquilegifolium meadow rue are beautiful.

Om the edge of the garden looking into the meadow we have tried to blend the two landscapes, with foxgloves and daisies.

Looking around the garden there is so much to see and enjoy but there is also the promise of more to come. The scent of this honeysuckle will be wonderful in June.

What are the highlights in your garden this month?
It is always wonderful to see other gardens and watch their development during the year. If you want to join in with Through the garden gate each month please let me know in the comments below and I will add your site, it is always fantastic to see a range of gardens from all around the world.

  1. How beautiful! Imagine having a meadow at the end of your garden! Your flowers are gorgeous. We had 2 days of very welcome rain. The water butts full and the garden is happy. Best, Jane x

  2. You are so way ahead of us - many of my plants are still waiting to flower - not sure if it is a lack of sunshine or some rather cold nights. Lovely to see what we are in store for though when they eventually do decide to bloom!

  4. Your garden is looking wonderful, so green and lush! Patty's Plum Oriental Poppy is an absolute beauty. I have seen clumps of chives in summer gardens and I must remember to plant some, they are very hardy, and would be fine for our climate.

  5. I love your giant chives and the heliotrope is stunning. I haven’t many purple flowers in my garden. I bet that honeysuckle smells wonderful. I need to look for a new one as ours fizzled out a few years ago. B x

  6. Good morning, Sarah! Oh, I have missed so much around my town this spring, with rushing off to work and most of our weekends being rained out. I almost can't wait to retire just so I can have time to truly enjoy all the small and great moments of this wonderful season! How lovely are all of the flowers you share.

  11. I think my garden is beginning to catch up with yours at last. I love your pink honeysuckle -- mine is common yellow and has no scent. I posted my end of month view. Thank you for hosting this meme -- it makes me get out and take pictures all month. P. x

  13. Sarah, I do love seeing what is blooming around you, and now want to plant a pot of chives; yours are so pretty. My last two posts have had flower photos as I discover what has been planted by others before me in my new home and now I am adding potted plants here and there. xx
