Through the Garden Gate April 2023

What a difference a month makes! Every day you notice something new emerging or getting larger in the garden and the colours have changed from the abundance of yellow from the daffodils to something brighter and more eye catching! We bought a small pink magnolia last year, after being reminded from Barbara at Coastal Ripples how magnificent they were and it has had several flowers this year.

Our old magnolia tree planted in our previous garden was a similar size initially and was planted in memory of a friend who died in her early 30's of cancer. I caught a glance of it when I was in Weymouth this month and was astonished how large it had become!

The apple tree blossom is late coming out this year and is only just appearing on our step over apple cordon, the other apple tree in the garden has very few flowers which isn't a surprise after an abundant crop last year.

The camassia is just starting to flower too with its beautiful pale blue star shaped flowers that open initially from the bottom of the stem. It provides a lovely contrast from the apple blossom in the background.

It's lovely to see the geraniums coming into flower too, we have been spreading this one around the garden, unfortunately we bought it as a cutting so don't know it's true name, isn't it beautiful?

The weather hasn't been particularly warm or sunny so we are still waiting to get out and enjoy sitting in the garden. I seem to have gone a bit over the top growing lots of flowers from seed so I have spent more time in the potting shed this month. My husband keeps reminding me that there is only limited space left in the garden for more plants!

What are the highlights in your garden this month?

It is always wonderful to see other gardens and watch their development during the year. If you want to join in with Through the garden gate each month please let me know in the comments below and I will add your site.

  1. Your bulb flowers look so pretty, I've just planted a whole lot of daffodil and ranunculus around my roses which are now in hibernation.

  2. I like your blue geranium, it looks like one I have but don't know the name of it either. I have quite a few hardy geraniums most of which I don't know the names of.

  3. How wonderful to see your old magnolia doing well. Hopefully your new one will be as good. Strange how apple trees have good and bad years. Ours is prolific with blossom this year.. tell your husband there’s always room for new plants lol! B x

  4. So you went a bit over the top growing many new flowers from seeds just like me! I can't resist new plants no matter how hard I try. We gardeners all seem to have that problem.

PS: I think it is a good problem to have.

  5. Our rhubarb is just poking up through the soil now. The lawn is beginning to turn green as well.

Your old magnolia tree is indeed a beauty and is huge! I especially love the colour of the geraniums which are nameless. So much glorious colour in your garden!

  7. Oh how beautiful. We have been almost two weeks early for everything blooming in my part of the world. Love your forget me knots. Reminds me that I had some last year - hoping they will have reseeded and bloom again this year. Have a delightful week.

  8. You do have a delightful garden. My little backyard in the city has mostly the trees that I had planted - all 16 of them. But two are magnolias and they have buds, so soon there will be flowers. Spring is so welcome.

  10. Sarah, I love your choice of flowers! Are those Forget-Me-Nots? I bought two quart size plants two years ago but they did not come back the next year. Still no sign of them. Do you plant them each year or do they reseed?
