Through the Garden Gate November
The leave have all fallen off the grapevine and we have had a mixture of weather this month. Last week, we had snow for the first time this year. Being by the coast, it didn't settle for long, whereas a mile inland, it was still relatively thick on the ground the following day!
Can you spot Tavi above?
A few days later Storm Bert hit our shores just on the Anniversary of the Great Gale of 1824 when hurricane-force winds and massive waves devasted the south coast of England including Bridport Harbour .We awoke to discover the fence had blown down again in the same location as 19 months ago, despite having professional fence contractors to build a new one. A rotten fence post couldn't stand the force of the wind! We were surprised that a new post had deteriorated in such a short period! We are getting it repaired but with climate change, we are wondering whether we need to put in a permanent hedge instead!
There isn't much colour or plants flowering in the garden at the moment so it makes me appreciate the ones that are providing a bit of a show!
Having expanded the number of pelargoniums in pots we are experimenting by leaving some in the potting shed and greenhouse over the winter. Has anyone tried using night lights and terracotta pots in the greenhouse overnight?
Earlier in the month at the Annual Bridport Literary Festival that celebrated its 20th year we had Carol Klein as one of the guest authors, It was fascinating hearing about her life and how gardening was so important to her even from a young age. It was interesting to find out her views of being a television garden presenter. We first come across her many years ago when she was selling plants at a local gardening show, when the children were small and we dragged them around gardens and garden centres most weekends! At the time they weren't keen but have both become keen gardeners! I would love to hear what encouraged you to garden! My parents were keen gardeners but their gardens were filled with roses and bedding plants it wasn't until we moved to Dorset and had an amazing country and walled garden that I came inspired with plants!
What are the highlights of your garden this month?
It is always wonderful to see other gardens and watch their development during the year. If you want to join in with Through the Garden Gate each month please let me know in the comments below and I will add your site.
