Down by the harbour

One day when the children were still at school I had rushed into town and while hurrying back to the car I noticed another mum and her parents sitting down by the harbour just watching the world go by. How I wished I had time to do the same. Today life is less hectic and I can now spend more time wandering around the harbour........

There always seems to be something to see - whether it is reflections in the water or different boats moored alongside and sometimes there is a chance to buy the produce!

The marina found within the inner harbour is always full of yachts and smaller boats there aren't many "gin palaces" here!

I also like to walk amongst the old cottages  -

catching glimpses of the harbour below.

The seagulls are always never far away! I'm not sure these bird feeders were designed for them!

The Black Death In Weymouth and PortlandThe harbour played a part in the death of between a third and half of the population in England in the 14th century. A ship arrived in the harbour from France in 1348 and on board was a sailor infected by the plague. Villages close to the harbour soon became infected and some of the villagers took refuge in other parts of the country and spread the disease even further. How terrifying this must have been.
Has anyone been watching Broadchurch on ITV on Monday evenings? It is a detective drama based around West Bay in Dorset starring David Tennant. If you saw it this week did you notice the yellow hut that they were searching was the same one as seen here last week!

Thank you all your lovely comments and welcome to my new followers Laurel , Melissa, Jennifer, Amanda, and Leanne. I can't see apart from Laurel and Leanne that you have blogs, if you do please let me know.

I hope the weather is warming up with you, the best part of this week has been freezing here! Do you have a favourite place you return too again and again where you can watch the world go by?

Sarah x

  2. Dear Sarah - I think that perhaps we have been very fortunate in the west of the country to avoid the last load of snow,
Your photos are always a joy to see, lovely compositions, and how nice the different colours of the houses are.

  3. Dear Sarah, I'm seduced with your wonderful photos. Really . Yes, if you can take the time to watch the people go by , you are lucky. And there is so nice things to see around...but you must also have the heart to do it. Here is warm enough . The place I return again and again is a little bit similar to yours. I will show it in a next post.

  4. Sarah - ignore the message on my blog - I see I can now comment again!

Harbours are always interesting places to meander and this looks a fascinating one. I've always loved Whitby in North Yorkshire for this very reason. And there are certain cafes with seats by the windows..

    1. Sorry I hadn't picked up your comment. I changed my settings to try and reduce the spam and inadvertently caused some of my blogging friends to be unable to comment. Lucent highlighted the problem and I immediately changed it back. Hope that this didn't affect too many of you.

  7. Hi Sarah,

Looks like a beautiful place, so tranquil and love the sea, harbour and all the gorgeous brightly coloured houses.
We went to a wedding in Dartmouth in 2007 and adored the lovely little village.
Hope that you are enjoying the week

    hugs

  8. Your photos remind me of the fishing villages that we love to visit in Devon and Cornwall. But as you so rightly say, time is needed to do it justice. We said when we moved to Devon we would take a day out a week. Then (when it didn't happen) it became once a fortnight, then a month.. you get the gist. Well, this year it will be different..

  9. Hi Sarah, it's so beautiful where you live! Gosh. I would love to visit there someday. I think Britain is at the top of my list for places to visit when I finally get the chance to do real traveling again when my kids are older. Thank you for sharing these beautiful photos. I'm one of your new followers whose blog you couldn't see; I'm sorry about that. If you want to take a look at my blog, it's at thistlebearhome.blogspot.com. I'd love to have you. :)

  11. Hi Sarah ....like Freda my favourite seaside sit and stare place used to be Whitby too, but thats a geographical challenge now. The weather up on the west coast in the Highlands has been amazingly stunning for about the last three weeks. That was probably our summer !

  16. We need to visit your lovely town so my husband can take photographs like the one of the red, white, blue and yellow buildings and then paint it for me.

We live at the beach, but nothing so picturesque as your quaint harbor.

  17. Beautiful photos as usual Sarah. I really like the 2nd from the top, I think that's my favourite.I've been watching Broadchurch and when they showed the hut I though what a fantastic view but didn't make the connectin with the one you showed. It is a beautiful place to go for a walk, to stop and admire the surrounding landscape.

  20. There is something alluring about sitting near a harbour. A retired sailor myself, with family still well involved in the yachting wold.
I never tire of going to see the yachts, the fishing boats or the sea.
As soon as I arrive at my apartment in the Algarve.. i am off to see the sea. In summer I am swimming in it..
Your village is so beautiful Sarah.. and there are some real yachts there.. like you say.. no gin palaces.. or playmobile boats ..as we sometimes call them.
I love anything that involves the outside ..
    nice post
best wishes and a good week Sarah.

  26. I agree harbours are such fascinating places, and can seem a little timeless where there is still fishing, old buildings and tiny lanes. This harbour looks full of history; particularly with its links to the Black Death. A lovely place to sit and watch (this corner of) the world go by.

It's been snowing and freezing all week here as well. Snow makes the world look beautiful but I'm longing for spring anyway.

If I could I love going up to Northern California but my backyard and walking around my neighborhood looking at what they are growing in their garden is great way to melt away the stress of the day.

Thank you Sarah for uplifting my spirits and transporting me back to beautiful Sundays spent soaking up the atmosphere of quaint Cornish fishing villages, or strolling around Plymouth's historic Barbican, watching the world go by! I miss those days immensely, as much as I miss English summers and Devonshire cream teas! mwah Hx

  46. That's just what I needed - a taste of my favourite harbour. We used to sail to Weymouth - my husband's home town in the early years of our marriage, on our darling little sloop called Merlin. Hope Cove almost felt like a 2nd home and I spent many hours sitting on deck with my tapestry or crochet, watching the world go by. We once spent a windy week, moored up as it was too windy to go sailing (for me anyway)! Thank You.
