A different view

Last week we swopped the normal view from our house of streets, houses and distant hills for a completely different view .....

This was our view from the windows of the chalet that we were staying at Bovisand Bay overlooking Plymouth Sound in Devon. We have stayed here twice before and not surprisingly keep returning.

As you can see it is an idlylic spot, there are four separate beaches in the bay (although only one allows dogs out of season!). The weather was mixed too, with sunshine, rain, hail and some strong winds, but that only adds to the magic of watching the ever-changing sea and sky.

This stretch of water has been the departure point for many historical events:-

In 1588 Francis Drake sailed out of here to defeat the Spanish Armada.
In 1620 the Mayflower sailed to America with the Pilgrim Fathers.
In 1768 James Cook left here on Endeavour and sailed to New Zealand and then went on to discover Australia's eastern coast.
In 1815 Napolean was held in a ship in Plymouth Sound for two weeks before it was decided to exile him to the island of St Helena.
In 1831 Charles Darwin sailed on the Beagle and  on this voyage discovered the theory of evolution.

Other voyages weren't so successful there are at least 70 wrecks in the bay.

We did tear ourselves away to revisit some of our favourite locations (further posts to follow), although our planned walk on Dartmoor didn't happen, thanks to me! After a pleasant morning wandering around Tavistock, we decided to eat our pasties overlooking the moor, hoping the rain would stop. Unfortunately I was driving and left the headlights on  - the result a flat battery!

So this was the only walk we got, on the edge of the moors while waiting for the breakdown recovery service to arrive. At least it had stopped raining and we weren't hidden in the moors without a phone connection!

We didn't like to stop on the way back to Bovisand and as way of any apology I treated us to a cream tea at Cafe Bovisands...

Tea pots ready

Sorry I didn't photograph the food! It's a great place to visit and we can recommend the food, drink and the views. Do you notice that the counter is an old church pew ? There are also some great walks from here along the South West Coast Path in either direction.

Daisy and I looking away from the sea for a few moments.

Thank you for sharing with me the the wonderful creatures you have seen by the sea. They ranged from squirrels to whales, dolphins, sharks, seals, a sea lion and flying fish, I did enjoy reading about them. As you can see we had a great opportunity to look out at sea, but sadly we didn't spot any dolphins. We did however have a few visits from badgers in the evening that made up for it.

In our garden

I always have mixed feelings returning home after a break, is it the same for you? The blossom from the magnolia  looked so pretty carpeting the lawn. Last night was Earth hour too, did anyone else join in? It was lovely to sit in the peace and quiet surrounded by the flickering flames from the candle light and enjoy an hour without electricity. We should really do it more often.  I always enjoy the clocks moving forward an hour at this time of year giving us lighter evenings for longer walks or more time spent in the garden.

Wishing you a good week, as always thank you for visiting me.

  2. Shame about the flat battery, we were up on Dartmoor today and definitely no mobile signals but some warm sunshine for a welcome change.

  5. Sarah! YOU AND DAISY LOOK SENSATIONAL! There is nothing like the sea to invigorate man and beast! And your garden, how gorgeous! We won't see our magnolias for a while, but today was a promising start to what I think will be spring in about a month. OH HOW I LOVE YOUR BLOG because you always take me to the shore, where I love to be. Happy week! Anita

  7. Mixed feelings are the story of my life. Now, nothing compares to the mixed feelings returning from camping. Oh my goodness. The hot shower seems suddenly to be the most brilliant modern invention, the sofa, an indescribable luxury. I love that feeling of returning to the comfort of home after being away, but the memory of the open sky and fresh outdoors is wonderful exactly because it is in the rear view mirror likely. Human nature is funny that way. Glad you had a great time away. I love the sea most of all myself. Thanks for sharing the history of that very spot. I really loved that.

  10. What a stunning view Sarah, nothing quite like a sea view. My dream retirement involves plenty of sea views....maybe one day!
We see a lot of seals at the coast, some of them are enormous and I have been with a friend and watched one almost "playing" with her dog whilst swimming in the sea.

  11. Thank you for the photos...especially the one of you and Daisy......now I can picture you when I read your blog.

Never fails......while on vacation, there always comes a point when I'd rather be home.....where you have your routine and all of your "stuff" round you.

I don't think I have ever felt as envious before of the early Spring that so many get...like you, you lucky ones! It's all grey and dirty melting snow.....but I can tell it is Spring....there are new bird calls that I haven't heard since last year....positively up lifting......but oh dear the yard is a mess.....smiling.....

  13. We were away last week too - and with a maelstrom of feelings now that we're back - for no particular reason! I love Tavistock - have always felt as though I could live there. The pannier market is such a delight. We often stop on the moor with pasties too, when we visit. It's good to get away.

  14. I haven't been to this part of the world for many years so it was lovely seeing it again here. The views over the sea are beautiful. I love the photo of you and Daisy! I never mind too much coming home at this time of year because of the spring and summer ahead. There's so much to look forward to in the garden. A late summer holiday is a bit different though!

  18. Beautiful photos of some stunning views Sarah. That coastline looks very idyllic. So glad you had a good break and I know what you mean about coming home again. Anything longer than a week and I'm counting the days until we get back, but yes it's difficult to settle down to everyday life again for a few days. Your garden looks very pretty.

  21. I love to get home after time away. Glad to hear you had a good time, despite changeable weather and mishaps. I love that tea shop with the tea pots and cosies. Great pic of you and Daisy. I forgot all about Earth Hour, but had I remembered I would have joined in.

  22. Loved seeing Daisy AND you down by the sea. Thank you for the video, too. Such a lovely sound. And your garden is so pretty. I'm hoping yesterday's snow will be the last we will see for a while and that my garden will finally start greening up and flowering.

  24. It sounds like a lovely break, and a gorgeous garden to come home to. When I was working, coming home after a holiday was something I would dread. In fact the last few days away were always tainted by the stresses starting to rebuild. At last, I enjoy going away and I enjoy coming home.

  31. Lovely pictures - glad you enjoyed your break.
I have only ever seen Plymouth Sound from the top of Plymouth Hoe, on a very short visit for a conference. From that angle I was very impressed by its great size.
Keep up the good work :)

  32. I really love to travel and see new sights, but when its time to come home I am equally delighted returning to my own little corner of the world - what do they say north, south, east, west, homes best.
Glad that you enjoyed a lovely break in Devon, very nice photo of you with Daisy with, of course, the sea in the background.

  33. How I love those two pictures of YOU and Daisy my dear Sarah! Thank you for coming to visit. My poem will be published in a magazine, and I am thrilled. It is purely from the sadness of hearing about a blogger who has been diagnosed. We are all so connected that the only way I could convey my connection to her was by taste.....oh how I love that we can create poetry with the mediums we love! You do so with your photos of the sea, and I thank you for taking me there, every time. Anita

  34. Indeed it looks as though you had a wonderful break. Such wonderful photos of the sea . The photo of you and Daisy is lovely Sarah. How nice to see you both together. I think the dogs love the walks as much as we do.
Very interesting to read that Napoleon left from Plymouth sound.. especially as we spent time at st. Helena while sailing.
love the tea pots, and the cafe looks so lovely.
I think that is a magnolia tree in your garden Sarah!!! Its my favorite of all trees.
No matter how things look or are when we come home.. Its great to be there.. Home with a nice cup of tea
A really lovely post Sarah. xxx val

  40. Hi Sarah,
What a beautiful place to spend some time. Love the photo of you and Daisy. It looks like she love the ocean. My boy is a bit too skittish. The photos remind me of our northern part of the state and the coastlines we have here. I miss going up there but one day hope to return there soon. I have mixed feeling too. But I make sure I take tons of photos so I can look back and re plan for my return. Thanks for sharing and have a beautiful day.
    Blessings!

  44. Hi Sarah,
They have come a long way in the stamping world. Hero Arts is one of my favorite stamp companies and they seem to have grown in many areas. They have stamps for all kinds for stampers. I have let the papers take over in my card making. I have come nice stamps and I have been watching some youtube channels for ideas on how to use them. One of them is Stamp Tv channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCq8pE8GZXQgfQBuPBn4K_7Q
also a blog that gives some great inspiration is Jacqueline's craft nest: http://myscrapbasket.blogspot.com/
I hope you get out your stamps and start to play.
Thanks for your visit and have a wonderful weekend.
    Blessings!

  45. Stunning countryside. What a picture to arrive home to.

We came home from holiday once to flick through the post & receive a cheque returned as invalid.... for selling our car !!!
I actually screamed. It got sorted about a week later with a very red faced woman who'd paid us from a cancelled check book ( it turned up & she forgot it was invalid )

I now NEVER open the post til the day after arriving home !

  47. Hi Sarah, I live in the West Midlands and I'll be here for a while yet so that Hubby and I can be close to his daughter who lives with her mother. I grew up in Norfolk and I miss the beaches so much. Thank you for such a lovely blog which helps me feel that I'm near the sea whenever I'm feeling coastal withdrawal!
