Blue skies and low tide

It has been good to see blue skies again especially after the high winds and rain earlier in the week that locally caused three lorries and many trees to blow over. Our solar panels today recorded the highest reading since they were installed in October and we have enjoyed our first ice-cream sitting outside by the sea.

The Bay has been very busy over the weekend, although not at 7.30 in the morning when this first picture was taken ...

and when there was only the company of a cormorant sitting on one of the navigation warning posts.

This week we have had one of the lowest tides of the year and taking advantage of this, the annual dredging of the outer harbour has been taking place. It has been a huge task to move the sand and pebbles back to the beach in between the high tides.

The lower tide has allowed closer access to some of the boats in the inner harbour.

This year I am trying to capture more of the plants and wildlife around the bay. The skylarks have also returned to the fields above us. It is so good to hear their joyful song again, however they are not easy to photograph, unlike this goldfinch who was quite happy to pose!

We have been busy in the garden too. Our jobs included planting some autumn cropping raspberry canes. Pride always comes before a fall - only last week I told Amanda how Tavi was so much better in the garden now he was a year older. A day after the planting we saw him proudly sitting on the lawn with a raspberry cane at his feet! What a shame the camera wasn't to hand!

When we took an evening walk and watched the sun go down, we met some holiday makers who were so excited by the amazing location and exclaimed how lucky we were all to be here on holiday. It seemed unfair to point out that we are able to enjoy this view via a short walk all year around.

I hope you too have enjoyed some sunshine over the weekend.

  1. It's been glorious hasn't it. Lovely photos, especially the birds. I shall look forward to seeing the nature you capture over the year. I'm smiling at Tavi's antics - probably just trying to be helpful... Wishing you a good week. CJ xx

  2. Idyllic photos and so tranquil. We are so lucky living all year round in 'holiday destinations '. It is so good to have the sunshine after all the storms. I look forward to seeing all the nature shots you capture this year. Have a good week. B x

  3. Sarah! My goodness, do you have a special lens to get so close of a shot of the finch? Marvelous spring anticipation going on here! The dredging of the harbor brings back so many fond memories when we lived on the coast of Massachusetts. Spring is coming to us; our neighbor's Cairn terrier Phoebe just got her coat trimmed. You can now see her cute little muscular body! hahahahahah

    Have a fabulous week.

    1. Hi Anita, I'm glad this bought back memories of living on the coast at Massachusetts. The photos are taken with a digital camera which does have a 16* lens. I was standing just underneath the telegraph wire at the time. Sarah x

  4. Liebe Sarah,

    Alles Liebe, Barbara

  6. Lucky, indeed! We don't have tides up here and I'm sure I would have a hard time getting used to them. As my perception of time is very poor I would never remember when to expect high and low and would most likely get it wrong most of the time.

  7. It has been a lovely day here too (still a little bit of snow on the hills so I made a tiny snowman in the sunshine!) and you took some beautiful photos, as always!

  9. I'm so glad you're having nice weather. We had a few days last week of Spring, but it is back to cold and rainy. Love your photos! And you are indeed fortunate to live where you do.

  10. Heute antworte ich mal in meiner Muttersprache. Würdest du mir sagen, ob du mich verstehst?

  12. The difference between high and low tides can sometimes be staggering, as your photos show. My parents once had a dog who would pull up every rose bush they planted and parade around the garden with the rose in its mouth. I remember one particular specimen got planted three times!

  13. It's been beautiful here too and it looks like the good weather might be around for a few more days yet. Yesterday was really mild and we were out doing some gardening with a few less layers of clothing than usual.

  15. It's lovely to see the blue skies and the stunning sunsets. The dredging does look like a large operation - no wonder it's drawing such a crowd. I never have any luck photographing skylarks either, so I'll just enjoy the sight of them and their beautiful song.

  21. It is always such a pleasure to read your blog and to see these things that I most likely won't ever have the chance to see. Your blog is like a lovely travel trip. Your goldfinch doesn't look anything at all like ours do around here. I'm glad your weather has settled down, ours is dreary today with rain - at least it isn't snow. You are so very lucky to live where you do and see the beauty every day - not just on holiday. Tavi is just showing you how much your efforts are appreciated. Thanks for sharing.

    1. If they didn't do the dredging over time the harbour would silt up also it helps the deeper harbour helps to prevent flooding. Sarah x

  25. Hey Sarah,
We've enjoyed very similar conditions in St Ives, including the very low tides. The sea life left behind on Porth Kidney beach was amazing. Typically I had left my camera in the car. You captured a gorgeous sunset.
    Have a great week.

  27. Dear Sarah - your photos are always a joy to see. I did not realise that so much work was required in maintaining harbours, we just take these things for granted, but a lot of hard work is obviously involved.

  28. What an interesting post...Dorset does look lovely and you must enjoy spring and summer there. Very interesting to see the low tide, an incredible contrast! Good luck with Tavi, brings back memories for us!

  29. Yes, the weather has been good these past days ... and your pictures are just lovely.
What a brilliant blue sky, and lovely to see around the harbour. That is quite a major task.

I particularly liked looking at the Stonecrop growing on rocks by the harbour wall - such lovely colours.

Have a lovely week, and keep on enjoying some good Spring weather.

    All the best Jan

  38. After 20 straight days of rain we are supposed to get two days of sunshine! I just posted photos of my stormy weekend at the beach, but I had a great time and love to see the sea in any weather! I was so interested to see your low tide dredging taking place...a wise time to tackle the task! Your gold finch is lovely and different from those around us. Please give Tavi love pats from me....I'm certain the uprooting was not intended to discourage you :) xx

  39. Good Afternoon Sarah, The photo you took of the sunset is beautiful. Dorset is such a lovely part of the country. We have beautiful views here in the Northumberland, but my it is so cold at the moment.
I would love to sit and enjoy an ice cream but I feel I had better wait a few more months for the weather to warm up, as I feel sure it will taste much better when I can eat it in the sunshine.
    Best Wishes
