Drawn to the water

I recently discovered an old tourist brochure dated 1898 encouraging the public to visit this stretch of coast. It stated that on a warm summer's day there is nothing that can be more refreshing, nothing more recuperative, nothing more calculated to fill one with contentment and satisfaction than to throw care and business to the wind and visit the sea!

This statement is still true 118 years later and can apply to any stretch of coastline, particularly this week when the temperatures here have soared and it feels as if summer has really arrived! So if  you haven't had a chance to visit the sea, hopefully these pictures will help refresh you too! Some of them were taken on a recent walk around West Bay on a photography course that I attended. It was run by an experienced local photographer. We received so many great tips and were encouraged to experiment by taking lots of pictures. I'm glad to say that these are only a few of the 200 that I took!

I'm sorry I have been so bad recently in visiting other blogs. It's that time of the year when there are so many distractions with my time. My computer has also decided to stop working. It could have be a disaster as I stupidly stopped backing up everything at the beginning of the year. We were fortunate to discover a very helpful person who was able to retrieve everything on our hard drive. I shall be making sure that I do a monthly back up in future! Have you ever had problems such as these?

Until next time.
Sarah x

  1. Your seaside is calming for my soul. I like that no matter where you are in the world if you are by the sea it is familar. Like the sea weathered wood in your photos looks lust like the wood along our shores. It feels the same and I can smell the salty air as if I am there beside you.

I have not backed up my computer in months. Thank you for the reminder.

  3. Yes, and I bought a backup thing and don't know how to do it. Beautiful pics. I had a teacher once that encouraged to take many pics because you might jut get that one shot out of all of them.

  4. Omigosh Sarah, you live in a postcard. Or rather, a series of postcards! Have a wonderful week! xox

  5. Love your photos, Sarah. I have an iMac with Time Machine. It automatically backs up several times a day onto a little device that's connected to my computer. If we had to vacate the house quickly, I could grab the little box easily and have everything that's on my computer.

  6. Fantastic photos, I bet the course was really inspirational. Sorry you've been having computer problems, it's so frustrating isn't it. I'm very lax at backing up, I've only ever done it once! I'll regret that one day. CJ xx

  7. Sounds like you are really getting into retirement. Gorgeous photos as always. It's great to find out tips to improve and be with like minded people. West Bay is looking good in the sunshine. Long may it last :) B x

  9. Darling Sarah, I LOVE YOUR WORLD! The water is such a perfect place to recuperate, even if one does not bathe in the water. To just see it, hear it, smell it, taste it (good seafood!) and touch it...that is enough. I have become an Anglophile. I have been and still am, a Frenchy, but since watching the Great British Bake off and Baking Show, I have fallen madly in love with the recipes, the settings, the PEOPLE and culture. I hope that one day, I can go to your lovely country, see the seaside, and think of all my British blogger pals. BE WELL!

  10. Every so often I get a longing to go to the sea, I love to sit watching the waves, it is so relaxing. We are looking after the grandchildren as usual during the school holidays so will be taking them on a few trips to the beach. Your photos are fantastic as always

  11. Beautiful photos, they say it all! A good photography class would be wonderful. We've started backing up again regularly, (every day) after a friend lost some of his data. Don't worry about not getting to blog comments, in our Aussie summer I hardly have time to comment on blogs, but really enjoy looking at them all in our winter.

  13. The lines from the brochure made me think of Mrs. Bennett saying, "A little sea-bathing would set me up for ever."

  16. Sorry to hear about your computer problem. I use an inexpensive external hard-drive, but probably not as frequently as I should do! But then, all my photos are stored in Google albums anyway, so accessible via other devices if necessary. Your photography course was evidently worthwhile, because your photos in this post are superb.

  17. I'd agree that it's hard to beat a trip to the seaside. We haven't had soaring temperatures though! I really love the photo of the wooden pier struts and metal hitching posts (I'm sure there's a proper maritime term for those metal bollards that ropes are tied to!). Juliex

  18. I know them only as metal bollards or metal posts, but like you I don't have a sailing background! Sarah x

  23. Hi Sarah, beautiful photos of the seaside, it reminds me that I need to take my camera with me when I go cycling to capture my local area. I always forget! We had such a lovely week of really warm weather, far too nice to be indoors blogging, I totally agree and I've not been so active myself this month due to wanting to be out and about! Sadly this week is rather grey again, but lets hope it improves! Happy week for you. Sharon xx

  25. Beautiful pictures!!! They make me realise I am ready for home after the most fabulous trip of a lifetime to Barbados. It is the most colourful, friendly, beautiful Isle, and we have been so lucky to stop in a villa that most folk can only dream of!! It has been another world!! See you soon, West Bay!!!!

  26. Lovely photos as always. It is wonderful to wander by the sea in hot weather and I think the summer evenings, when it begins to cool down and the coast isn't as busy - is the best time of all ( and computer problems here too!)

  27. It's beautiful! Wish I could be a tourist there. This year we went to Iowa for our vacation and that is about 8.5 hrs from here. Ohhh someday! Beautiful photos!!

  28. I would love a trip to the sea. :o) I love a quiet beach. It sounds like you might need a new computer with more memory and a better hard drive.

  29. What a great find that brochure was! I love really vintage stuff like that and it's certainly true of where you live Sarah - such a lovely tranquil spot (at least in your photos on that day!). Thanks for the reminder to back up my computer, I need a new hard drive for that and it's well overdue! Hope your computer problems are now all fixed. Cx
