Through the Garden Gate August 2022

Children return to schools at the end of the week here and it feels as if Autumn is approaching- the temperature in the mornings is cooler and shoes are suddenly wet with dew on the first dog walk of the day. At long last in August we had some rain. It was strange seeing it again after an absence of two months!  You never get quite what you wish for and the heavy rain storms instantly caused local flooding and some cliff falls along the Jurassic Coast. Having become accustomed in recycling the washing-up water onto the garden it has been a relief to have the water butts full again, but snails and weeds have reappeared in numbers!

Rudbeckia Goldsturm is one of our favourite plants in the garden at this time of year and appears in several locations as you can see.

The large golden yellow leaves of  Humulus Lupulus 'Aureus' (Golden Hop) have looked stunning against the grey fence and are festooned with golden hops.

After a break the roses are blooming again for a second time and filling the garden with fragrance.

The apple crop this year is incredible and we can't wait to eat the produce. It might be another few weeks for them to ripen. We enjoyed our first Discovery apples from the market this week.

We have been enjoying eating fresh food from straight from the garden.

Growing flowers from seeds always results in mixed results the Nicotiana x hybrida Whisper have been a resounding success, whereas the Cosmos flowers this year have been disappointing.

How have your gardens been growing this month? Tavi and I are off to pop 'Through the Garden Gate' and visit your gardens now!

It's always wonderful to see other gardens from around the world and share our love of gardening. If you would like to join us with Through the garden gate this month, please let me know in the comments below and I will add you below.

  1. Our tomatoes are slow to ripen this year. We may have ripe ones next week. The green beans were great and the cucumber is delicious and plentiful. We haven’t tried the peppers yet. They are hot by the look of them. Spaghetti squash, which I tried this year is growing well. One plant and three squash so far.

Your garden looks wonderful as always! Lots of produce there!

  4. Thank goodness you got rain even though it was too much at once, at least it arrived.
Wow! The fresh vegetables look delicious. You are a great vegetable gardener in addition to being able to grow beautiful flowers. I don't seem to have time to do both. My flowers are all weeds. Next year I must put more flowers in with my vegetables or maybe vegetables in with my flowers.

  5. Can’t believe we started this journey in 2016. It’s amazing to compare gardens from then and now. Wow what a lot of produce and amazing apples. We had lots last year but our poor apple tree is practically bare this year. Lovely to see more roses, I think they have loved the extra heat. Good to see Tavi enjoying the garden. B x

  6. The rudbekia are finished here, probably the dry weather in August. Lots and lots of cherry tomatoes, can't eat them fast enough. Moving into the start of the 3 'ber' months, almost time to start putting the garden to bed for the winter.

We have been pruning. Do you use the hops or purely for eye candy?
