The shades of Autumn in our garden

The leaves are beginning to slowly change colour in our garden .......

The gravel garden is at it's best at this time of year with the rubeckia goldstrum , grasses and sedum still providing an adundance of colour.

  The verbena seeds eveywhere.

and the leaves are starting to fall adding a carpet of colour.

The apples are ready for picking....

without any assistance from Twinkle - she had her eye on something else!

There are a few flowers to pick, although the hydrangeas have now lost their colour. What is the highlight of your garden at the moment?

I have sneaked the last picture in, it was taken in Abbotsbury Gardens a few weeks ago it just captures for me the essence of Autumn.

I seem to spend more time in the kitchen in the Winter and Autumn and I have today made some roasted plum jam, it was easy to do and the flavour is so rich and  intense. I picked up the recipe via Dialaja from Croatia see here (you will need to follow her link to the recipe - it translated into English with no problems).  It would make a good item to add to a Christmas Hamper. It always fun trying recipes from all around the world and Dialaja has some lovely dishes and desserts, so do pop over and visit her.

Hope you are having a good weekend.

  2. It's lovely Sarah, your use of grasses give it a real seaside feel too.
I wish I could get my Verbena to seed. It's really struggled in this and the previous garden. Just to have it return each summer, strong and healthy, is enough of a challenge for me! Possibly it needs a lighter soil.

    1. We transformed a piece of lawn into a gravel garden several years ago and we have been amazed by the results. Plants we can't grow elsewhere have flourished. I do snails out there but can't recall any slugs, so maybe that's part of the reason that plants seed so readily.

  4. ROASTED PLUM JAM? Oh dear, that has to be good and intense; I love roasted ANYTHING because it brings out the deep flavors. Roasted chestnuts are my favorite at this time, mixed with sautéed mushrooms!

Dearest Sarah and Daisy, your garden is like ours in that it seems to have wanted to linger just a tad longer to show off its beauty. This weekend however, I had to finally throw out my beautiful white inpatiens that did so well this summer. What a great time of year, non?

    BE WELL YOU TWO! Anita

    nice post .
wishing you a happy weekend.. val x x

  7. Your garden is beautiful. The gravel area is lovely. No highlight at all in my garden I'm afraid, unless you count the fact that some of the grass seed I threw into the massive bare patch has germinated.

  8. Sarah your garden is looking wonderful! Grasses are the best thing in mine at the moment too, along with rose hips and crab apples, but we've had a frost so scarcely any flowers left.

  10. Beautiful photos - as usual.

I am enjoying my fall garden for the first time in many years. While working, fall was always a busy time at school and with coaching volleyball. I was always too late in getting home to even be in the garden and on weekends I was too busy cleaning house. This year I am enjoying 3 huge chrysanthemum plants bursting with color. I planted them at the end of the season last year and the literally grew 5 times their size.

  12. Hello Sarah lovely photos as always. I think in my garden the thing standing out the most is the vigina creeper it's almost scarlet at the moment. Your garden looks wonderful. The verbena is one of my favourites. I want to get some of the rudbeckia too it's so lovely this time of year xx

  13. Lovely photos of your garden - I love the sunlight on the autumn leaves. And the rudbeckia is gorgeous. I have some Japanese anemones still blooming, but my sunflowers are the real highlights at the moment. I planted some of them quite late so they are still looking lovely.

  14. What a lovely garden you have Sarah - the drift of rudbeckia is beautiful. It is raining here at the moment and the garden is looking rather dreary and flattened by the wind.

    1. We were out that way this morning and it was cold and foggy. We have a season ticket to Abbotsbury gardens so we visit there at least once a month. They are illuminating the plants for some evening visits for around a week so watch this space!

  18. Just gorgeous Sarah. Your garden has lovely color. Love the apples. Your tree has produce so many. There is nothing better than a home grown tomato and a home grown apple. We have an apple farm that we go to every year and the taste and smell from a just picked apple is a wonderful treat. Have a wonderful Sunday
    Blessings.
