Through the Garden Gate October 2018
The weather in October can be so varied and this can have quite an effect in the garden. This month we have sunshine and high temperatures, rain and strong winds and twice this week have had a hard frost, luckily I managed to take these pictures the day before.
Leaves are falling
However some plants still think it is summer, such as this honeysuckle and rose.
The cutting border is still full of colour with cosmos, marigold and dahlias. I love this combination of colours at this time of year. My daughter always buys me some dahlia bulbs for my birthday in February, this one below has such a huge head, isn't it fantastic?
In the vegetable garden only one carrot came up, we accidentally let it go to seed, and look what happened! I have been picking these lovely flowers, combining them with flowers from the cutting patch. It has worked so well that I think I might do this again next year!
How has your garden been this month? If you would like to join in with Through the garden gate each month please let me know in the comments below and I will add your site.

Our tomatoes have finished sadly but they've had a good year. Love your carrot flowers; a very happy mistake. Your cutting garden looks wonderful with perfect colour combinations. A good October for the garden I think. I have just posted my Through The garden gate too. Just in time ! B x
ReplyDeleteI wonder - since you can use carrot tops to make pesto or chimichurri, if the flowers could go in salad or be a garnish?
ReplyDeleteHi Diana, Thank you for the lovely suggestion I will look in to this. Sarah x
DeleteHere is my October almost in time

We still have tomatoes from out garden. Most of the garden is put to bed now though.
ReplyDeleteIt's always lovely to have a peek at your garden :)
ReplyDeleteThat dahlia is gorgeous! I grew two varieties this year, but unfortunately planted them out late so only had blooms from one of them. After a few freezes, our garden is basically done now. The weather is certainly variable these days - last year I was picking tomatoes until the end of October, but this year, they were basically done a month earlier.
ReplyDeleteSarah, I do love your blog! Love these images that transmits tranquility and contentment. Lovely garden. Our snow melted, the trees look naked in the orangy brown horizon and the temps going down around here.
ReplyDeleteYour flowers are lovely to see, Sarah...including the carrot! Our roses are spent, but the Geraniums still look cheery in the window box. I planted some Mums and Pansies not long before we started getting our usual Fall rains, but the said rains have pummeled the Mums and Pansies so they sadly look very downtrodden and drab in color. There are thankfully still a few colorful leaves to be bright spots in the gray of rain though. Thanks for posting :)
ReplyDeleteYour garden is looking very colourful & flourishing considering all the changes in weather you have had. I think wind is my least favourite! I love the carrot flowers.
ReplyDeleteLove those pretty soft pastel colours that you have captured of the fallen leaves.
ReplyDeleteSummer's leftovers are special in the way that they draw us back into the garden. The weather has been variable here too, but no frosts yet. I noticed a few last tomatoes yesterday among the asparagus ferns which need cutting back and tiny pink flowers on the blackcurrant and pineapple sage plants. I really must get out and take some photos today while it's still dry!
ReplyDeleteMy carrots always get root fly damage and are a waste of time. I was thinking of not growing them again, but after seeing your carrot flower heads perhaps I should just let them go to seed and then have the lovely flowers!
ReplyDeleteI am late with my post this month, but here it is https://margaretspatch.blogspot.com/2018/11/through-garden-gate-october.html
Hi Sarah,
ReplyDeleteThe last of the summer flowers and fruit and vegetables always seem to be great before winter. Th dahlia is really pretty and lovely that your daughter buys you some for a gift. Always enjoy seeing your wonderful garden and all you have growing. Have a great weekend ahead
