The North Devon Coast

As usual, we took a holiday close to the water. Appledore is situated on a river estuary where the two rivers the Taw and Torridge meet, with lovely views across the water to the village of Instow. It was a very relaxing location to stay, with the water lapping at the end of the garden and the river estuary being so calmer than the sea!

Appledore is full of maritime history and winding narrow streets full of colourful houses with house names to match its location - Captains Rest, Journeys End, Lobster pot, Sea view, Cockle cottage, Tides Rest, Four Tails some even had illustrations to match...

We always like to book our holidays in advance, giving longer to look forward to the event, some locations book up well in advance and if you are taking a dog your choices are more limited. We booked our holiday to Appledore well over a year ago as we had planned to visit in June and attend our friend's wedding in Bude, further down the coast. Unfortunately, both were cancelled due to Covid-19 but we were able to rearrange our holiday for September instead and as it turned out the weather was better than the week in June! The Wedding has been put off for another year, with fewer numbers.

The quality of the light there was so special, just as in St Ives the light on the sandy beaches creates a magical ambience, apologies for showing so many examples below but these landscapes really enhanced our holiday and sense of wellbeing - so far from the problems in the world in 2020.

Needless to say Tavi had a great time too!

There is more to come so I speak soon in the meantime stay safe!

  3. Looks really very wonderful.
We have also a West Highland Terrier, and we are really in love with this dog. For us these Terriers are the best dogs.

    Many greetings

  7. We had a holiday in Appledore a few years ago. I liked the arty/ craftyness of the place. The little shops tucked away down side streets. We've just returned from a holiday in north Devon too, this time we were in the country near Holsworthy. I'm trying to get back into blogging, have been so busy recently

  9. Looks like you had a good stay in North Devon with some good weather. I have been to Bideford but not made it up to the mouth of the river. Is Appledore the place where there used to be ship building but it closed recently?

    1. Yes Appledore was a centre of ship building as was West Bay. They announced that the Appledore that a month ago the shipbuilding has now reopened with a new owner.
