Waiting for spring

Could there be a hint of spring in the air?

I think these ducks still need some convincing!

Although there is still some ice lying around, emerging buds are appearing on the branches.

And the sky is very blue and for once that bitterly cold wind is absent.

Can you hear the birds singing and smell the new growth?

I discovered the first cow parsley in flower in a sheltered spot!

Back in the garden the daffodils and grape hyacinths have recovered from the cold.

This weekend we managed to get into the garden and sort out  the vegetable beds. We also picked our second crop of rhubarb - the terracotta rhubarb forcer works so well  - elsewhere in the garden the rhubarb leaves are only just emerging.

I hope you found promising signs of spring/autumn  this weekend too! I know we British are notorious about talking about the weather, but it seems such a long winter!

Welcome to my new followers Sarah, AnneSeagull SuzieRoberta, CJ Quilter, Wandering Minstrel, and Arietia it's lovely to have you all on board!

  1. The photo with the ducks on the fence is a comical image - it makes you smile.
Spring is going to come in with a great swoosh - I feel it in my bones. This time last year I was showing cherry blossom and magnolia, and at the moment those little blooms seem weeks away, but glad you are enjoying your rhubarb.

  2. Dearest Sarah!

WE MINNESOTANS also gab about the weather, because our lives revolve around the cold! It looks as if we are on the same latitude; there are just patches of ice now, the mallards are gathering, the woodpeckers are out, but still no sign of green. It was not as bitterly cold this morning, so I attempted to walk and investigate!

It looks as if Daisy is your private investigator into spring. I trust she will find some sign of life as she goes out and about!

Good to see you my dear. Enjoy waiting! Anita

    1. They didn't look as if they were looking at anything in particular! I think they like us were enjoying the sunshine and it is a good spot to get a view of the nature reserve.

  13. Great photos, I love the ducks on the fence picture. Spring is really slow in the Peak District this year but I spotted lots of signs of spring in Yorkshire yesterday. It's much more advanced with you in the south though!

  14. I love your photographs, especially that one of Daisy! Spring is springing at last and time in the garden was so enjoyable today, with a little warmth in the sun. We actually had to water!!

  18. Your 1st photo made me smile, they look like they're waiting for something as they're all looking in the same direction. That's a shot well caught on camera.

My daffs are so late in coming, there's some leaves but no signs of the flower as yet although there's lots in the countryside around here. I want Spring now, Winter seems to not want to go away. I don't mind the cold so much as long as there's a little bit of sunshine and a blue sky but I don't think I'll get that today.

  21. ~ Those ducks warmed the heart, Sarah! I know just what you mean...I stepped out the door yesterday and thought...WOW the cold easterly wind has 'blown away'....~ certainly gives you a spring in your step to see peeping flowers that have blossomed with the warm sunshine over the weekend....Lovely pictures as always...Maria x

  25. Gosh, cow parsley already! I can still see snow on the hills but it has gone from here in the river valley now and I did find one corner of a canal path where there was blossom at the weekend.

Hope the sun's still shining on you :)

  27. Great picture of the ducks on the fence. It made me think of the expression "having your ducks all in a row." You Brits aren't the only ones who obsess about weather. Canadians are every bit as bad! :-)

  33. Love the ducks - a great shot to catch! Your fences are really wide if those big ducky webbed feet can stand on them. Love the colourful flowers, too. We are still a bit behind you here in Wales. All the best :)

  34. Thank you Sarah and I'm glad you and Daisy enjoyed my little guy. Opie is getting better about wearing his little hat. I was surprised that he left it on for the video. Have a great day!

  37. Hello!!
I am so excited to of stumbled upon your blog and am thoroughly enjoying looking through all your photos.
I'm from the North East but Dorset and the south west has always intrigued me and it's lovely to see such gorgeous photos of the area. I actually got to visit once and have since done a skydive to raise money for the ape rescue sanctuary there.
My partner was born in Bristol and lived in Somerset as a child so I hope that we may move back to the Dorset or Somerset area eventually.
Twinkle and Daisy are so cute by the way!!

    Best wishes,
    Danielle.
